Zanzibar Travel Visa
Table of Contents

Zanzibar, is an exotic paradise known for its white sandy beaches, spice plantations, Swahili culture, and centuries old architecture. As part of Tanzania, Zanzibar follows the visa regulations set by the mainland, and travelers are required to adhere to the same entry rules. Whether you’re visiting Stone Town’s bustling alleyways or unwinding on Nungwi’s quiet shores, understanding Zanzibar travel visa requirements is crucial to ensure a smooth travel experience.

Entry Requirements and Visa Free Access

Most travelers visiting Zanzibar will need a visa unless they are from one of the visa exempt countries. Nationals of many African countries, such as Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and South Africa, enjoy visa free entry for stays of up to 90 days. Citizens from certain Commonwealth and SADC countries may also enter without a visa or obtain one on arrival. However, it is always advisable to check the latest visa requirements with the Tanzanian Immigration Department or the nearest Tanzanian consulate before travel, as regulations may change.

Visa on Arrival and eVisa Options

Zanzibar offers both visa on-arrival and electronic visa (eVisa) options, providing flexibility for international travelers. The visa on arrival can be obtained at major entry points including Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar City, as well as Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro airports if you are flying into Tanzania first. Visitors are advised to have USD 50 in cash (USD 100 for U.S. citizens) and their supporting documents ready, such as a passport valid for at least six months, proof of onward travel, and accommodation bookings.

Alternatively, travelers can apply for an eVisa through the official Tanzania Immigration website before departure. This is highly recommended during high travel seasons to avoid long queues and ensure a hassle free arrival. The processing time for the eVisa is typically 10 working days, although it’s advisable to apply well in advance. Once approved, the visa is sent via email and must be printed out and presented upon arrival.

How to Apply for the E-Visa:

  • Visit https://visa.immigration.go.tz

  • Fill out the application form

  • Upload your passport bio page and passport photo

  • Pay the visa fee online

  • Receive a confirmation email and wait for approval (usually within 5–10 days)

Once approved, print your visa confirmation and present it at the airport upon arrival.

Types of Visas for Zanzibar

The most common visa issued for Zanzibar is the single-entry tourist visa, which allows for a stay of up to 90 days for tourism or leisure purposes. Multiple-entry visas are also available for travelers who may need to enter and exit the country multiple times, particularly for business or family visits. Other visa types include business visas, transit visas, and student visas. All visas must be used within three months from the date of issue, and overstaying may result in fines or penalties.

Clothing Restrictions and Cultural Considerations

As Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim region, travelers are advised to dress modestly, particularly when visiting public areas, markets, villages, or religious sites such as mosques. While beachwear is acceptable on the coast and at resorts, it is considered disrespectful to walk through towns or use public transport in revealing clothing such as bikinis, short shorts, or sleeveless tops. Women should consider carrying a light shawl or sarong to cover shoulders and knees when needed.

In Stone Town and other populated areas, it’s recommended that both men and women wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Loose-fitting, breathable fabrics are ideal given Zanzibar’s tropical climate. Although visitors are welcomed warmly, respecting local customs and dressing appropriately fosters positive interactions and shows cultural sensitivity.

Note:

  • No bikinis or topless sunbathing outside of private beaches or pools

  • Avoid tight or revealing clothes in public areas, especially in Stone Town

  • No walking around shirtless or in swimwear outside of beach zones

  • No see-through or mesh outfits, especially for women

Practical Tips for Visiting Zanzibar

In addition to your visa, make sure you carry copies of your accommodation confirmation, return or onward travel ticket, and yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country where yellow fever is endemic. While there is no departure tax from Zanzibar, it’s advisable to confirm with your airline in case the fee is not included in your ticket. Additionally, although Zanzibar is generally safe, travelers are encouraged to remain vigilant, especially when exploring isolated beaches or unfamiliar areas after dark. Plastic Ban,  Tanzania has banned single-use plastic bags. Avoid bringing them, or you may be fined at customs. Currency, Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is used, but USD is widely accepted in resorts and hotels.
