The verdant Mathews Ranges lies between Laikipia and Kenya’s northern border. Spanning approximately 150 kilometers, it is remote and largely untouched. This area is a true wilderness. The Mathews mountain range is a secluded retreat for those fortunate enough to explore it. The forest provides an excellent opportunity for hiking through riverine valleys and crossing streams, guided by local Samburu people.
The wildlife in this area tends to be elusive. However, if you are fortunate, you may encounter elephants, which can be a thrilling experience. The forest teems with life, and particularly for bird enthusiasts, there are chances to spot Turacos. On a lucky day on a Kenya safari up north, you might spot some members of the big cats such as leopards and lions roaming.
While the Mathews Range offers only limited but comfortable accommodations, mobile safaris can be arranged, enabling guests to venture deeper into the wilderness.
The Matthews Range is a pristine wilderness that is considered one of Kenya’s most isolated areas. Located between the arid northern deserts of the country and the more populated Laikipia safari region, the Range presents a striking difference from the adjacent flat savannah plains. Despite attracting very few tourists, this region provides some of the best walking experiences in East Africa.
