Table of Contents

Zanzibar is one of the most popular travel destinations in East Africa, known for its beautiful beaches, rich history, and spice plantations. Located just off the coast of Tanzania, this island group is often called “The Spice Island.” Visitors come not only to explore Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also to relax on its long stretches of white sand beaches and explore the surrounding islands.

Each part of Zanzibar offers something different, from lively beaches with restaurants and nightlife to quiet fishing villages and untouched islands where nature takes the lead. Whether you are interested in water sports, diving, cultural experiences, or just relaxing by the ocean, Zanzibar has a wide variety of beaches and islands to explore.

1. Nungwi Beach

Nungwi Beach is located at the northern tip of Zanzibar and is one of the island’s most famous beaches. It is often listed among the best beaches in the world because of its clear turquoise water and fine white sand. Unlike many other beaches in Zanzibar, Nungwi is less affected by tides, so swimming is possible almost any time of day.

Visitors are drawn here for activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, sunset cruises on traditional dhows, and visiting the Mnarani Turtle Conservation Center. The beach has a lively atmosphere, with many restaurants, beach bars, and shops, making it a great choice for people who enjoy both relaxation and nightlife.

Places to stay: Nungwi offers everything from budget hostels to luxury resorts. Popular options include The Z Hotel, DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Nungwi, and smaller guesthouses that are friendly to backpackers.

2. Kendwa Beach

Kendwa Beach is just south of Nungwi and is known for its wide sandy shoreline that stays perfect for swimming even during high tide. It is quieter than Nungwi, which makes it popular with visitors looking for a calmer atmosphere, but it still has a good social scene. The beach is famous for the Kendwa Rocks Full Moon Party, which brings together locals and tourists for music, dancing, and celebrations under the stars.

During the day, Kendwa is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, beach walks, and relaxing while watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean. It is also one of the few beaches where the sand remains soft and wide throughout the year, making it a great spot for families and couples.

Places to stay: Accommodation in Kendwa ranges from mid-range hotels to high end resorts. Kendwa Rocks Hotel is the most well known, but other excellent choices include Gold Zanzibar Beach House & Spa and several smaller boutique resorts along the beach.

3. Paje Beach

Paje is located on the southeast coast of Zanzibar and is one of the most famous beaches for water sports. The shallow, clear lagoon and steady winds make it one of the best places in East Africa for kitesurfing. Its long stretch of white sand is also perfect for beach walks and swimming during high tide. Paje has a youthful, backpacker friendly atmosphere with beach bars, hostels, and a lively social scene.

Activities: Kitesurfing, diving, snorkeling, and beach parties.
Places to stay: Options range from budget hostels like New Teddy’s Place to mid-range hotels such as Paje by Night and luxury resorts like Kisiwa on the Beach.

4. Jambiani Beach

Just south of Paje, Jambiani Beach offers a quieter and more authentic experience. This long, palm fringed beach is home to a traditional fishing village where visitors can see locals working with fishing nets and women farming seaweed. The tides here go out far, leaving tidal pools to explore. It’s less crowded, making it ideal for travelers who want peace and cultural connection.

Activities: Village tours, snorkeling, fishing trips, cycling along the coast.
Places to stay: Guesthouses and boutique lodges such as Coral Rock Zanzibar, The Loop Beach Resort, and Casa Beach Hotel.

5. Matemwe Beach

Matemwe is on the northeast coast of Zanzibar and is known for its long, quiet beaches lined with palm trees. Its biggest attraction is being the gateway to Mnemba Atoll, one of the top diving and snorkeling sites in the world. Matemwe is calm and less commercial, making it attractive for couples and travelers who want relaxation away from big crowds.

Activities: Snorkeling and diving at Mnemba Atoll, kayaking, and village walks.
Places to stay: Upscale lodges and boutique hotels such as Matemwe Lodge, Sunshine Marine Lodge, and Villa Kiva.

6. Prison Island (Changuu Island)

Located just 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town, Prison Island is a popular day trip destination. Despite its name, it was never used as a prison for people, but for holding rebellious slaves in the 19th century. Today, it is famous for its giant Aldabra tortoises, some over 100 years old. The island also has a small beach and coral reefs for snorkeling.

Activities: Visiting the tortoise sanctuary, snorkeling, and short hikes around the island.
Places to stay: Most people visit Prison Island as a day trip, but nearby Stone Town has plenty of accommodation such as Park Hyatt Zanzibar, Tembo House Hotel, and budget guesthouses.

7. Mnemba Island

Mnemba is a small private island off the northeast coast, opposite Matemwe. It is surrounded by one of the best coral reefs in Zanzibar, making it a world-class snorkeling and diving spot. The island itself is exclusive, with only one luxury lodge available, but day trips for snorkeling and diving are possible through local boat operators from Matemwe. The waters here are rich with tropical fish, dolphins, and sometimes even turtles.

Activities: Snorkeling, diving, dolphin spotting.
Places to stay: &Beyond Mnemba Island Lodge (luxury, private island experience). For other travelers, staying in Matemwe and taking a boat trip is the best option.

8. Nakupenda Sandbank

Nakupenda, which means “I love you” in Swahili, is a natural sandbank located near Stone Town. It appears during low tide and disappears as the tide rises. It’s a popular spot for day trips where visitors can swim, snorkel, and enjoy a seafood picnic organized by local tour operators. Its main attraction is the feeling of standing on a small strip of white sand surrounded completely by the Indian Ocean.

Activities: Swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, seafood picnics.
Places to stay: Since it’s a sandbank, there’s no accommodation here. Visitors usually stay in Stone Town and book a day trip.

Conclusion

Zanzibar’s northern beaches, Nungwi and Kendwa, are among the island’s top attractions. Nungwi is perfect for travelers who want a mix of swimming, diving, and vibrant nightlife, while Kendwa is better suited for those looking for a quieter but still lively beach experience. Both offer stunning sunsets, plenty of activities, and a wide range of accommodation options. Whether you are a backpacker, a couple, or a family, these beaches show why Zanzibar is considered one of the best beach destinations in the world.
