Located in the Samburu District’s southeast corner, the Samburu National Reserve is a phenomenal 165km² park that is massively popular for a variety of reasons. This reserve is separated from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve by the Ewaso Nyiro River, and has annual mean temperatures that range between 18ºC and 30ºC.

This stunning Kenyan destination is home to several rare specialist species like the Beisa Oryx and the Gerenuk, that are sometimes referred to as the ‘Samburu Specials’. Furthermore, astoundingly there are an estimated 900 elephants within this reserve, who are also joined by other eye-catching game like lions, leopards and cheetah. It is also common to spot wild dogs within their natural habitat in the Samburu alongside a diverse selection of birdlife.

Samburu National Reserve Park Entry Fee

Park Entry Fees (subject to change):

  • Non-Residents: USD $70 per adult per day
  • Residents: USD $40 per adult per day
  • Citizens: KES 1,000 per adult per day

Best Time to Visit Samburu National Reserve

  • Dry Season (June to October): This is the best time for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around the river and water sources. The weather is dry and sunny, making it ideal for game drives.
  • Wet Season (November to May): The park becomes lush and green, and birdwatching is excellent with the arrival of migratory birds. However, wildlife disperses, and roads may be more challenging to navigate.

Still pleasant temperatures but with higher rainfall. Sunshine & clear skies still encountered.

High Season

Jan – March and Nov- mid Dec

Generally drier & warmer with clearer skies and lower rainfall

Peak Season

July – October

Short’ rains are a possibility but skies also tend to be clearer & sunny days possible

How to get to Samburu National Reserve

  • By road: Samburu National Reserve is about 350 kilometers from Nairobi, a drive of approximately 6-7 hours.
  • By Air: There are scheduled flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Samburu’s Oryx Airstrip, flight taking approximately 1.5 hours. Followed by a short drive to the reserve.
