Volcanoes National Park, which is located in Rwanda, is renowned for offering a luxurious experience to tourists who want to engage in gorilla trekking, given that there is access to luxurious lodges and ease of access through bamboo forests. On the other hand, Uganda has Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which is renowned for offering an authentic experience to tourists who want to engage in gorilla trekking through thick and ancient jungle canopies.

Additionally, Uganda has Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which is renowned for offering breathtaking views of volcanoes at high altitude. All of these places are unique in that they offer trekking experiences to tourists through different terrains, allowing them to choose between well-manicured slopes and thick, ancient jungle canopies depending on their physical condition.

Animals to See in Gorilla Trekking Safaris

Of course, the mountain gorilla is the main draw, but there is no shortage of other wildlife in these regions. Visitors can also spot endangered species of golden monkeys in the bamboo forests or go on a hunt for chimpanzees in Uganda’s Kibale National Park. The thick forests of Bwindi also provide habitats for forest elephants and giant forest hogs.

The complete wildlife experience can also include a trek through the Queen Elizabeth National Park to spot tree-climbing lions or head to Murchison Falls for the Big Five.

Cultural Experiences to combine with Gorilla Trekking Safaris

The experience is also enhanced by the rich cultures of the local populations who share these wilderness habitats with the mountain gorilla. In Rwanda, the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village offers a glimpse of local dance and culture, or a city tour of Kigali that is both poignant and powerful. In Uganda, the Batwa Trail in Mgahinga National Park allows visitors to learn from the indigenous Batwa population about their ancient forest-dwelling traditions.

This is all-important because it allows visitors to understand that the success of the mountain gorilla is inextricably linked with the success of the local population.
