About Virunga Lodge
Virunga Lodge is a premier luxury eco-lodge in Rwanda, celebrated for its Afro-chic’ design and panoramic views of the Virunga Volcanoes and the twin lakes, Bulera and Ruhondo. Located Approximately 45-50 minutes from the volcanoes National Park headquarters, it serves as a high-end base for mountain gorilla trekking.
How do you Get to Virunga Lodge?
BY ROAD.
The drive covers roughly 113-123km. Access to Virunga by road is a scenic journey of approximately 3hours from Kigali, the capital of Rwanda.
To reach the lodge, travelers generally follow this route:
Kigali to Musanze: Depart Kigali on the Kigali–Butare road, then turn right after about 3 km onto the Kigali–Musanze road.
Through Musanze (Ruhengeri): Continue through the town of Musanze. From there, take the
Ruhengeri–Cyanika roadfor about 17 km until you reach Nyarwondo.
The Final Ascent: Look for the Volcanoes Virunga Lodge signpost and turn right onto a murram (gravel/dirt) road. This final stretch is approximately 5 km long.
BY AIR.
Access to Virunga lodge by air is primarily conducted via a helicopter transfer from Kigali International Airport (KKGL). This method significantly reduces travel time compared to 3-hour drive from the capital.
Helicopter services provide the fastest and most scenic route to the lodge, offering views of Rwanda’s ‘’ thousands hills and the volcanic peak.
The flight duration is approximately 20 to 30 minutes from Kigali.
Scheduled & Charter Flight Options to Ruhengeri Airstrip:
You can charter a flight from Kigali to the Ruhengeri Airstrip in Musanze. From the airstrip, it is approximately a 45 to 60-minute drive to reach the lodge.
What Facilities are at Virunga Lodge?
The lodge features 10 guests Bandas (chalets) named after African lakes, each offering private terraces with panoramic views of the Virunga Volcanoes and the twin lakes, Burera and Ruhondo.
Standard Bandas: 7 units (including doubles and twins) featuring en-suite bathrooms, double vanities on sharing a room.
Deluxe Bandas: 3 larger units named Ibirunga, and I Kinyarwanda, which offer private sitting rooms and more refined interiors.
Personal Butler Service: Guests receive one complementary massage per stay (typically 30-50minutes) the spa also includes a sauna for post-trek relaxation.
Dian Fossey Map Room: A specialized space for conservation lectures, research, and private events.
