Wilderness Little Vumbura

About Wilderness Little Vumbura

Wilderness Little Vumbura is a secluded and luxurious six suite safari camp situated on a small island in the northern part of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The camp is located in the Vumbura Concession, a vast wilderness area rich in biodiversity and jointly managed with local communities to ensure both conservation and economic benefit. The surrounding environment is a unique mix of permanent waterways, seasonal floodplains and dry land, which creates one of the most diverse habitats in the Delta. This location allows guests to enjoy both water based and land based safari activities, making it one of the few camps where a complete Delta experience can be found in a single stay. The intimate size of the camp means each guest receives highly personalized service, while the island setting offers a sense of total immersion in nature.

ACCESS & LOCATION of Wilderness Little Vumbura

Access to Little Vumbura is part of the adventure. Most visitors arrive via a light aircraft flight from Maun, which takes about 35 minutes, or from Kasane, which takes around one hour and forty five minutes. The flight itself offers spectacular aerial views of the Okavango Delta’s network of waterways and islands. After landing at the nearest airstrip, guests are transferred by vehicle through the bush, followed by a short and scenic boat ride to the island. Due to its position in the middle of the Delta, there is no direct long distance road access, which preserves the remoteness and exclusivity of the camp. The Vumbura Concession covers more than 60,000 hectares, encompassing open floodplains, mopane woodlands, papyrus swamps and deep channels, making it one of Botswana’s most rewarding safari regions.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT Wilderness Little Vumbura

The camp offers six spacious tented suites, each raised on wooden decks to give elevated views of the surrounding floodplain. The interiors are designed to be both elegant and comfortable, with king size beds draped in mosquito nets, seating areas, writing desks and large mesh windows that allow in fresh air and natural light. En-suite bathrooms feature double vanities, flushing toilets, and indoor and outdoor showers, with hot water provided through solar heating. Each suite has a private deck where guests can relax and watch passing wildlife such as elephants, lechwe or giraffes. The main area of the camp includes a thatched lounge and dining space, a library nook, a plunge pool overlooking the water, and a fire pit for evening gatherings under the stars. Elevated wooden walkways connect the tents to the communal areas, and the entire camp is run with strong environmental principles, using solar power and eco-friendly waste systems.

ACTIVITIES AT Wilderness Little Vumbura

While staying at Wilderness Little Vumbura, you might be wondering what activities you can engage in. Below we have listed some of the top safari accommodations you can book and do while staying at Wilderness Little Vumbura.

Game Drives

Game drives are the signature experience at Wilderness Little Vumbura, taking place in open 4×4 safari vehicles that allow for unobstructed views and easy photography. These drives venture into the Vumbura Concession’s diverse landscapes, from grassy floodplains to dry savannah and patches of mopane woodland. Morning drives typically begin at sunrise when predators are still active and the light is perfect for photography. Lions, leopards, and cheetahs are often sighted, along with hyenas, jackals, and occasionally African wild dogs. Elephants and buffalo move through the concession in impressive numbers, and the variety of antelope includes species like sable, roan, kudu, tsessebe, and the rare sitatunga. Guides are skilled at interpreting animal behaviour and tracking fresh signs to maximise sightings, while also pointing out smaller details such as insects, reptiles, and medicinal plants.

Mokoro Excursions

When the Delta is flooded, mokoro trips become a highlight. Guests are seated in traditional dugout canoes, each guided by an experienced poler who uses a long pole to glide silently through shallow channels. This activity offers a peaceful and intimate perspective of the Okavango, bringing guests close to delicate water lilies, papyrus stands, and the small creatures that thrive in these waterways. It is common to spot colourful frogs resting on reeds, dragonflies darting over the surface, and birds like African jacanas walking across floating vegetation. The calm pace and quietness of the mokoro make it ideal for photography and simply soaking in the Delta’s stillness.

Motorboat Safaris

For exploring deeper channels and open lagoons, motorboat trips are offered. These allow access to areas that are unreachable by vehicle or mokoro, especially during high water. The rides often bring guests close to pods of hippos, basking crocodiles, and a wide variety of waterbirds. Cruising at sunrise or sunset adds a magical quality as the sky and water reflect rich colors. Motorboat safaris also provide a sense of the scale of the Delta, showing just how vast and interconnected its waterways are.

Birdwatching

With over 400 bird species recorded in the concession, birdwatching at Little Vumbura is rewarding at any time of year. The mix of habitats supports a variety of species, from floodplain specialists like wattled cranes to elusive rarities such as the slaty egret and Pel’s fishing owl. Boat and mokoro trips are particularly good for spotting water associated birds, while game drives cover ground for raptors, rollers, and bee eaters. The guides are adept at helping guests identify species, making this a favorite activity for dedicated birders and casual nature enthusiasts alike.
