Game Drives
Xigera offers twice daily game drives, early morning and late afternoon, when wildlife is most active. These are done in open 4×4 vehicles with highly experienced guides and trackers who know the Delta intimately. Because the lodge is in a private concession within Moremi Game Reserve, drives can go off-road for close wildlife encounters and continue after dark for nocturnal species. Expect to see lions, leopards, wild dogs, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and antelope species, as well as smaller animals like servals and honey badgers. Night drives use spotlights to reveal bushbabies, civets, and other elusive creatures.
Baobab Treehouse Sleep Out
A signature Xigera experience is spending a night in the Baobab Treehouse a sculptural, three story structure standing above the floodplain. Completely off-grid and open to the sky, it allows guests to fall asleep under the stars to the sounds of the Delta at night. It’s ideal for honeymooners, special occasions, or anyone wanting a once in a lifetime wilderness moment.
Cultural and Artistic Experiences
Xigera is also a living art space. Guests can join guided tours of the lodge’s collection, which features over 100 unique pieces of African art, design, and sculpture. Some evenings may include talks or storytelling by guides, blending cultural history with natural history.
Water Based Safaris
The lodge’s prime location in the Okavango Delta makes water activities a highlight, especially in the flood season (May to September). Guests can explore by mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe, gliding silently through the papyrus lined channels to spot kingfishers, frogs, and elephants bathing. Motorboat safaris offer access to deeper channels and lagoons, giving opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, and large flocks of waterbirds. These trips are particularly photogenic, with golden light reflecting off the water during early mornings and sunsets.
Guided Walking Safaris
For those wanting a deeper connection to the land, guided walking safaris provide an up close look at the Delta’s ecosystem. Led by armed professional guides, these walks focus on tracking animals, identifying plants and trees, reading spoor (tracks), and learning about traditional bush skills. They are also excellent for photography, birding, and appreciating the smaller details often missed in a vehicle.
Birdwatching
The Okavango Delta is one of the best birding destinations in Africa, with over 450 recorded species. Xigera is home to rarities like the Pel’s fishing owl, wattled crane, slaty egret, and African skimmer. Birdwatching can be done as part of game drives, on foot, or even from the lodge’s decks, where guests can observe species coming to feed along the water.
