All About Mombasa City

Discover Mombasa City

Mombasa is Kenya’s oldest and second-largest city, located along the country’s Indian Ocean coastline.

Mombasa blends rich Swahili culture, centuries of history, pristine beaches, vibrant markets, and modern tourism infrastructure.

Whether you’re exploring centuries-old landmarks, relaxing on tropical beaches, enjoying fresh seafood, or combining your trip with a Kenya safari, Mombasa remains one of East Africa’s most rewarding coastal destinations.

How to get to Mombasa City

Mombasa is situated on Kenya’s southeastern coast along the Indian Ocean, approximately 480 kilometers southeast of Nairobi.

Mombasa is highly accessible;

  • By Air: Moi International Airport (MBA) accepts regional flights from Nairobi (45 minute) as well as direct international flights from major European hubs. The airport is roughly 13 km (8 miles) from the city center.

  • By Train (SGR): The Madaraka Express (Standard Gauge Railway) is a highly popular, scenic option connecting Nairobi to Mombasa’s Miritini Station in about 5 to 6 hours, cutting right through Tsavo National Park.

  • By Road: A drive from Nairobi to Mombasa via the Nairobi – Mombasa highway, with the drive taking 8 to 10 hrs depending on traffic and road conditions.

Best Time to Visit Mombasa City

Mombasa enjoys a tropical climate throughout the year, characterized by warm temperatures and coastal humidity. While the city can be visited year-round, the dry seasons offer the most comfortable conditions for sightseeing, beach holidays, and outdoor activities.

Low Season

April to May

The long rainy season occurs during these months, bringing heavier rainfall and increased humidity.

While showers are often intermittent, some outdoor activities may be affected.

High Season

June to October

This is one of the best times to visit Mombasa.

The weather is cooler and less humid, making it ideal for beach activities, city tours, water sports, and excursions.

Many travelers combine a coastal holiday with a Kenya safari during these months.

October offers a perfect sweet spot for photography due to clear skies, lower humidity, and active marine life in the local reserves.

Peak Season

December to February

The festive season and northern hemisphere winter bring increased visitor numbers to Mombasa.

This period offers warm sunshine, clear skies, and excellent beach weather.

Hotels and resorts often experience high occupancy, particularly during Christmas and New Year.
