Rwenzori Mountains National Park, located in western Uganda along the Uganda-Congo border, is one of Africa’s most stunning and unique national parks. It encompasses the Rwenzori Mountain range, often referred to as the “Mountains of the Moon”, which was christened by the Alexandrine geographer Ptolemy in AD 150. It features some of Africa’s highest peaks, including Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and Mount Baker. Its highest point is 5,109m above sea level on Mt Stanley’s Margherita Peak. The park  hosts 70 mammals and 217 bird species including 19 Albertine Rift endemics. This park is mostly famous for mountaineering,  trekking, hiking and climbing excursions or safaris with or without summiting the Margherita.

  • Mountain Peaks: The Rwenzori Mountains offer several peaks for climbers, with Mount Stanley’s Margherita Peak being the highest at 5,109 meters. It’s Africa’s third-highest mountain.
  • Diverse Ecosystems: The park features a variety of ecosystems, from tropical rainforest and bamboo forests to alpine meadows and glaciers. The unique flora includes giant lobelias, groundsel, and heather.
  • Trekking and Climbing: The park offers a range of trekking options, from short hikes to multi-day climbs. The Central Circuit and the Kilembe Trail are popular routes for reaching the higher peaks.
  • Wildlife: Though less known for its wildlife, the park is home to species such as forest elephants, chimpanzees, hyraxes, and various bird species, including the Rwenzori turaco and the Malachite sunbird.
  • Scenic Landscapes: The park is known for its stunning views of snow-capped peaks, glaciers, rivers, waterfalls, and dense forests.

 

N/B -> As Of May 14, 2024 – Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) announced a temporary suspension of hiking activities to Margherita Peak in Rwenzori Mountains National Park,  after a comprehensive assessment conducted by the team in response to reports of a crevasse formation in the Margherita glacier. In the interim, we encourage visitors to explore other picturesque peaks within Rwenzori Mountains National Park. Notable alternatives include Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Cheptegei Peak on the Stanley Range. These routes offer breathtaking views and unique experiences amidst the stunning landscape of the park.

Best Time to Visit Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Dry Seasons (June to August and December to February)

  • This is the perfect time for trekking and climbing, as the trails are less muddy, and the weather is more favorable. For mountaineers the climbing window from June to August is the best times to attempt an ascent to Margherita Peak of Mountain Rwenzori.

Wet Seasons (March to May and September to November)

  • The park receives heavy rains during these months, making the park very empty, and serene, which makes it suitable for solo mountaineers, who would want to climb the Rwenzori mountains by individually, at their own time schedule and convenience.

This are the parks dry months and therefore the best time for climbing and visiting Rwenzori Mountains National Park. For climbers trying to attempt climbing to margherita peak of mountain Rwenzori, the best times to attempt is from June to August.

How to get to Rwenzori Mountains National Park

By Road

  • The park is about 375 kilometers from Kampala, Uganda’s capital making the drive approximately 4 to 6 hours depending on the route used. Most visitors enter the park via the towns of Kasese or Fort Portal.
  • The shortest route starts from  Kampala to Fortportal via Mubende  for a distance of 300km by a 4×4.
  • The longest route begins from Kampala, via Masaka through Mbarara, Busheny to Kasese for 350km distance drive. This route offers an amazing stop over at the Equator to experience the difference in both the Northern and  southern  hemisphere.

By Air

  • There are scheduled charter flights are available from Entebbe International Airport to Kasese airstrip, which is the nearest airstrip to the park.
  • Which is then followed by a 40 minutes drive to the Rwenzori mountains National Park.
