Family Safaris in Africa

Plan the Perfect Luxury Family Safari Holidays with your Kids

Why Choose Family Safaris?

Why You Should Book An African Family Tour Safari?

Family safaris in Africa are extraordinary, life-transforming, and informative journeys that enhance family ties and provide an unparalleled wildlife experience in their natural habitat. These safaris are an escape from the normal world, offering customized and malaria-free itineraries, fun activities for kids, and unforgettable intergenerational experiences in the best destinations of Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa.

A family safari is the best way to unplug from the screens of your phones and the distractions of your daily lives. In the midst of the wild, families can reconnect through experiences such as starlit dinners or campfire stories. Such experiences are great for forging a special bond and improving communication between parents and their children. By discovering the majestic side of Africa together, you forge a special family heritage and a love for nature.

Fun Learning in the Wild With Kids

An African family safari adventure offers incredible learning opportunities for kids to learn about different animals and cultures firsthand from professional safari guides. There are also Junior Ranger programs available at many safari lodges that teach kids how to track animals and take care of nature. Such learning experiences instill a sense of respect for nature and the world’s ecosystems. It makes a regular vacation an educational and exciting experience compared to a classroom.

Authentic Wildlife Experiences on a Family Safari Game Drive

Experiencing the Big Five in their natural environment gives families an appreciation of nature that a zoo simply cannot provide. Observing a pride of lions or a herd of elephants roaming in the wild sparks the imagination of a child. Authentic, real-world experiences foster empathy and a lifelong passion for animal conservation. Observing wildlife in the stunning African bush is an experience that your family will remember for many years to come.

Perfect Family Safari Accommodations

Today, safari accommodations are built with families in mind, and they offer comfortable suites, tents that are connected, and swimming pools that are fun for kids. Some of the camps offer guides who know how to keep children occupied during shorter and more exciting game drives. The meal times are flexible, and there is professional childcare, which means that parents can enjoy the peace of the bush.

Safe and Healthy Family Safari Destinations

Safety is a concern for parents and families, and this is why malaria-free destinations such as the Eastern Cape of South Africa or Laikipia in Kenya are so sought after. These destinations provide a safe and often fenced environment that is ideal for families with young children. Selecting a location that is low risk means that you do not have to consider preventative medication. This means that your entire family can focus on the fun of the wildlife and the surroundings.

Other Activities to Enjoy on a Family Safari

The experience of a family safari is not limited to sitting in a safari vehicle. There are other activities that families can engage in, such as nature walks, camel rides, and visits to local villages to learn about different cultures. Your family safari adventure may even end with a visit to the beach, where children can go swimming or snorkeling in the ocean. This is just one of the ways in which families can stay energized throughout their African adventure.

When is the best time to go on Family Safari?

Reasons to Book Your African Family Safari With Cheetah Safaris

The optimal period for a family safari is during the dry season, from June to October. The vegetation is sparse, making it easier for kids to track animals. Also, animals congregate around waterholes, providing an optimal and predictable experience that fits perfectly with the summer holidays in the northern hemisphere.

An alternative option is the green season, from December to March, with warm and adorable animal babies. Even though the vegetation is thicker, it is a magical time for families to witness the calving season in the Serengeti.

Dry Months for Easy Viewing: June – October

The dry season, which runs from June to October, is the ideal time for a family safari. These months are ideal because the bushes are less dense, making it easier for kids to locate animals that are hiding in the grass. Since there is little water, animals congregate around water sources, meaning there is always something to do. This time of the year is also ideal because it corresponds with the school holidays, and the climate is pleasant enough for kids to enjoy spending time outside.

Peak Season for Wildebeest Migration: July – October

If your family is interested in witnessing the Great Migration, the best time to visit is between August and October. During this time, the Masai Mara in Kenya is filled with millions of wildebeest and zebras. Alternatively, July to October is the ideal time to visit the Tarangire National Park in Tanzania to witness massive herds of elephants. These are ideal times for kids because there is always something to do, with a high probability of witnessing lions and leopards in their natural habitat.

Viewing Calving Season during Summer: December – March

For families who enjoy baby animals, the best time to visit is during the “green season” from December to March. This is calving season in the Serengeti, where thousands of baby wildebeests and zebras are born. The climate is warm, and the scenery is stunning, with the landscape turning a vibrant green. Although there may be some rain in the afternoons, the sheer number of adorable baby animals and colorful birds makes this an incredibly magical time for kids.

Best Countries to Visit for the First Time (All Year)

Kenya and Tanzania are great destinations for first-time visitors because they have traditional and easily accessible safari parks with lots of animals. If you have health concerns, the Kruger area of South Africa is a great malaria-free destination at any time of the year. This region has excellent roads for self-driving and many family-friendly safari lodges.

What to Expect on a Family Safari

A Typical Family Safari with Cheetah Safaris

The experience of a family safari with Cheetah Safaris is a life-changing educational experience that combines the thrill of an early morning game drive with a peaceful evening spent in the African bush. In order to effectively deal with the different African climates, a family needs to ensure comfort by wearing layers of clothing, especially during the chilly mornings and evenings. Safety is of utmost importance, and this means adhering strictly to the instructions of the guide. At the same time, activities are designed to ensure children are kept entertained throughout the trip.

To ensure a comfortable experience, a family needs to consider booking a private vehicle or a charter flight, especially since this would ensure a tailored experience that meets the different needs of guests’ children. In addition, a family must consider booking a malaria-free region with child-friendly lodges. This would ensure a hassle-free experience, with parents having the opportunity to showcase the beauty of the wildlife and the landscape.

Daily Family Safari Activities and Weather

The daily routine will involve early morning game drives to spot wildlife in their most active state, followed by a serene view of nature in the evenings. Since temperatures will vary greatly, it is important to wear layers to accommodate cooler mornings and much warmer afternoons.

Safety and Engagement on Family Safari

Although it will be an exhilarating experience, it is important to note that adhering to a strict safety standard is a requirement. In order to keep younger travelers engaged, several activities are incorporated in the experience to keep children occupied between game drives.

Slow Pacing and Privacy Logistics on a Family Safari

It is very important to note that making a private 4×4 Safari Jeep vehicle or a private charter flight a priority will be beneficial for your family. In order to get the best out of your experience, it is recommended that you choose a malaria-free zone and a family-friendly lodge.

Can I bring young children on safari in Africa?

Yes, you can take young children on a safari in Africa, but it depends on your success in selecting malaria-free areas, child-friendly accommodations, and private vehicles. Although many accommodations have age restrictions (usually 6+ or 12+), there are options for specialized, fenced, or family-friendly accommodations. Factors to consider include shorter game drives, malaria protection, and the appropriate time of year for optimum safari experience.

Yes, family safaris in Africa are safe, as long as they are well organized, as safari lodges and guides are highly trained in wildlife safety. Safety is ensured by professional guides, safe and often fenced lodges, and by following strict guidelines such as staying in the vehicles. Malaria-free areas are available for young children.

Yes, vaccinations are a must for a family safari in Africa, especially in Kenya and Tanzania, where Yellow Fever is often mandatory for entry. Other recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Polio, in addition to routine vaccinations such as MMR. Malaria prophylaxis is also highly recommended.

Family safaris, especially those that entail light aircraft flights, always have a strict luggage restriction of 15 kg (33 lbs) per person in soft bags. This applies to both checked and carry-on bags. Some areas, such as Southern Africa, may have a 20 kg (44 lbs) limit, but 15 kg is the norm in East Africa.

A family safari will normally take between 7 to 10 days, which is the best and most balanced amount of time to spend on a safari without getting too exhausted. This will enable the family to go on several game drives and visit 2-3 different national parks.

For a family safari, it is highly recommended that you book 9-12 months prior for the best options for family-friendly accommodations, connecting rooms, and activities. For peak season travel, which is from June to October or Christmas, it is recommended that you book 12-18 months prior.

There are many African safari camps and lodges that offer excellent family-friendly accommodations, including interconnecting tents, two-bedroom suites, and private villas designed with comfort and security in mind. Child-friendly facilities such as fenced camps, swimming pools, and kids’ programs are offered in popular destinations in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa.

Pack For a Purpose

Cheetah Safaris is a serious advocate of sustainable safari practices in Africa. As part of our efforts and initiative, we engage and support schools and children who need knowledge to better their lives. The best gift a child can be given is education, skills, and creativity.
