Zambia Travel Visa

Table of Contents

Traveling to Zambia offers an unforgettable experience, from exploring the thundering Victoria Falls to safaris in South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi National Parks. Before your journey begins, it’s essential to understand the Zambia Travel Visa requirements and options. This guide outlines all visa categories, how to apply, costs, and what travelers need to prepare for a smooth entry.

Types of Visas for Zambia

Zambia classifies travelers into three visa categories, category A, B, and C, based on nationality and the purpose of travel.

Category A (Visa Exempt):
Travelers from Category A countries do not require a visa to enter Zambia for tourism or short stays. They are granted visa free entry at the border and can stay for a specified number of days. This category includes citizens of countries like South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and several other SADC members.

Category B (Visa on Arrival / eVisa Eligible):
Category B travelers can obtain a visa on arrival at international airports and designated border posts, or apply online in advance via Zambia’s eVisa portal. This category includes countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, most of the EU, and Canada. It’s ideal for tourists and business visitors who don’t want to go through the embassy process.

Category C (Pre-approved Visa Required):
Visitors from Category C countries must obtain a visa prior to arrival by applying online or visiting a Zambian embassy. This includes certain Asian, North African, and Middle Eastern nations. These travelers must have their visa approved before boarding their flight or arriving at the border.

KAZA Univisa (Zambia + Zimbabwe):
The KAZA Univisa allows travelers to enter and exit Zambia and Zimbabwe multiple times over a 30-day period. It also includes day-trips into Botswana through Kazungula. This visa is especially convenient for those visiting Victoria Falls or doing multi-country safaris. It costs USD 50 and is available on arrival at selected entry points such as:

  • Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (Lusaka)
  • Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (Livingstone)
  • Victoria Falls Land Border
  • Kazungula Land Border

How to Apply for a Zambia Visa

Depending on your country of origin and visa category, there are three ways to obtain a Zambia visa:

1. Visa on Arrival:
If you’re from a Category B country, you can apply for a visa at your port of entry. Immigration officers will issue your visa after checking your documents and collecting the visa fee (cash preferred in USD).

2. Zambia eVisa Application (Recommended):
Zambia’s official eVisa portal (www.evisa.zambia.gov.zm) provides a convenient online platform for submitting visa applications ahead of your trip.

Steps to apply:

  1. Visit the eVisa site and create an account.
  2. Select the type of visa (tourist, business, transit).
  3. Upload scanned documents: passport bio page, photo, hotel booking, return flight ticket, and itinerary.
  4. Make payment online via card.
  5. Receive an approval letter by email (processing time: 3 to 7 business days).
  6. Present the printed eVisa approval at immigration on arrival.

3. Embassy Application:
Travelers from Category C countries must apply in person at the nearest Zambian consulate or embassy. This involves filling out forms, submitting documents, and waiting for official approval before traveling.

Zambia Visa Costs

Visa fees vary depending on visa type and number of entries. Below is the general fee structure (USD):

  • Single Entry Visa: $25
  • Double Entry Visa: $40
  • Multiple Entry Visa: $75
  • Transit Visa: $25
  • KAZA Univisa: $50

Note: Visa on arrival fees are payable in cash only. It is advisable to carry small denominations of USD, especially at land border crossings.

Requirements for a Zambia Visa

When applying for or receiving a visa, travelers must present the following:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months with two blank pages.
  • A recent passport-size photo (for online or embassy applications).
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel or lodge) booking confirmation.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay.
  • A return or onward ticket.
  • Detailed travel itinerary.
  • KAZA Univisa applicants may also need to show proof of travel into both Zimbabwe and Zambia.

For minors, especially those traveling with one parent or unaccompanied, additional documents such as a notarized consent letter may be required.

Who Is Exempt from a Zambia Travel Visa?

Nationals from Category A countries enjoy visa free travel to Zambia for tourism or short stays. Additionally, children under 16 years old, traveling with parents from eligible countries, do not need a visa for entry.

Zambia has bilateral agreements with certain nations that allow visa free or reduced fee access for diplomatic and official passport holders as well.

Visa Extensions and Overstaying

Tourists who wish to stay longer can apply for a visa extension at the Department of Immigration offices in Lusaka, Livingstone, or other major towns. Extensions are granted on a discretionary basis and usually extend the stay for 30 more days.

Overstaying your visa is a serious offense and can result in fines, deportation, or bans from future entry. Always monitor your visa validity and request an extension before your visa expires.

Final Thoughts

Zambia’s visa policy is designed to be flexible and welcoming to travelers. With options for visa on arrival, eVisa, and the KAZA Univisa, visitors can enjoy seamless travel experiences whether they’re in Lusaka, Livingstone, or deep in the national parks.

For those planning combined trips across Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana, the KAZA Univisa is a cost-effective and efficient solution. Be sure to prepare all your documentation in advance and apply for the appropriate visa type based on your itinerary and nationality.
