Cheetah Safaris Sustainable Safari Policy

our Impact and Sustainable Policy

At Cheetah Safaris, we are committed to being responsible, respectful, and impactful in all our operations. This Sustainability Policy explains how we conduct our operations in the office and in the field. We strive to be more effective on both of our ends, to ensure we are part of protecting our biodiversity in the world.

About our Sustainability Policy

Effective Date: April 22, 2025

Our Sustainable policy is updated regularly. The policy below will be effective from the date published above, as this guides us in our daily operations both in the office and in the field.

1. Mission and Goal

Our Mission: To curate life-changing safari experiences that actively contribute to the conservation of African wildlife, the empowerment of local communities, and the preservation of our ecosystems. We strive to ensure that every journey with Cheetah Safaris leaves a positive footprint on the land and its people.

Our Goal: To become the leading provider of sustainable eco-tourism in East Africa by achieving a net-positive impact on every destination we visit. We aim to achieve a 65% reduction in our operational carbon footprint and 100% elimination of single-use plastics across our entire operations by 2030.

2. Core Sustainability Pillars

Our sustainability strategy is anchored in five specific United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

I. Quality Education (SDG 4)

We are committed to fostering learning opportunities for local communities and our guests.

  • Community Support: We actively support education in the Amboseli and Mara regions by facilitating donations of school supplies, books, and sports equipment.
  • Student Sponsorship: We pledge to continue our scholarship programs, having already impacted over 5,000 students.
  • Guest Engagement: Through our partnership with Pack for a Purpose, we encourage guests to bring specific supplies needed by community projects.
  • Knowledge Sharing: We provide guests with deep educational experiences regarding local cultures and ecosystems.

II. Life on Land (SDG 15)

We are dedicated to the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems.

  • Wildlife Protection: We actively fund initiatives focusing on big cats and elephants in the Mara and Amboseli-Chyulu ecosystems.
  • Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation: We support organizations that work to reduce conflict between local farmers and wildlife.
  • Responsible Guiding: Our guides strictly adhere to “No Off-Roading” and “Keep Distance” policies.

III. Climate Action (SDG 13)

We strive to minimize our carbon footprint and combat climate change through operational efficiency.

  • Carbon Offsetting: We prioritize partners and camps that utilize solar power and water recycling systems.
  • Reforestation: We support local tree-planting initiatives to sequester carbon.

IV. Partnership for the Goals (SDG 17)

We believe that we can achieve more by working together with local and global organizations.

  • Strategic Alliances: We partner with Big Life Foundation, WorldServe International, and AMREF Flying Doctors.
  • Community Collaboration: We engage directly with Maasai and Samburu communities to ensure tourism revenues support local development.

V. Gender Equality (SDG 5)

We are committed to ending discrimination and ensuring equal opportunities for all.

  • Inclusive Employment: We actively seek to hire and train female safari guides and planners.
  • Economic Empowerment: We source goods from women-led local enterprises (e.g., beadwork cooperatives).

3. Operational Guidelines: Office & Field

To achieve our goals, we have implemented specific “How-To” protocols for saving water, conserving energy, and reducing plastic usage in our daily operations.

A. Water Conservation

In the Office:

  • Leak Management: Implement a “See it, Report it” policy for leaking taps or pipes to ensure immediate repair.
  • Efficient Cleaning: Use bucket systems for cleaning office floors rather than continuous running water.
  • Responsible Draining:we ensure to use designated drainage systems within our office to maximise on recycling of wastewater.

On the Field (Safari):

  • Bucket Washes: Safari vehicles are cleaned using water-efficient bucket methods; hose pipes are strictly prohibited in bush camps.
  • Guest Briefings: Guides brief guests on the scarcity of water in arid regions, encouraging short showers and the reuse of linens and towels at lodges.
  • Eco-Friendly Lodging: We prioritize booking camps that utilize greywater recycling systems for irrigation.

B. Energy Conservation

In the Office:

  • Smart Lighting: Maximize natural light usage and transition 100% of office lighting to energy-efficient LEDs.
  • Power-Down Protocol: Ensure all computers, printers, and non-essential electronics are fully unplugged or switched off at the wall at the end of every workday or when not in use.
  • Equipment: Purchase only Energy Star-rated appliances for office use, and use of UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply Units) to save on energy.

On the Field (Safari):

  • Solar Inverters: Safari vehicles are equipped with inverters to charge guest camera batteries while the engine is running, reducing the load on camp generators.
  • Route Optimization: Guides are trained to plan game drives efficiently to minimize fuel consumption and emissions without compromising the wildlife experience.
  • Passive Cooling: Vehicles are parked in the shade during stops to reduce the need for air conditioning (AC) usage.

C. Reduction of Plastic Use

In the Office:

  • Single-Use Ban: A strict ban on plastic cups, stirrers, and single-use water bottles. Staff are provided with ceramic mugs and reusable bottles.
  • Digital First: We prioritize digital marketing materials and itineraries to reduce the demand for plastic-laminated paper products.
  • Supplier Audit: We actively negotiate with suppliers to reduce plastic packaging on office deliveries.

On the Field (Safari):

  • Reusable Bottles: Every guest receives a high-quality, reusable metal water bottle upon arrival.
  • Bulk Water Systems: Our safari vehicles are fitted with 20L bulk water dispensers for refilling bottles, eliminating the need for thousands of small plastic bottles annually.
  • Waste Management (Pack it in, Pack it out): All waste generated during game drives (e.g., picnic wrappers) is kept in the vehicle and returned to urban centers for proper recycling; no trash is ever left in the wild or at camps with limited waste facilities.

4. Guest Code of Conduct

To ensure the success of this policy, we request our guests to:

  • Respect Local Cultures: Ask for permission before taking photos of community members.
  • Leave No Trace: Dispose of waste properly and avoid taking natural souvenirs.
  • Conserve Resources: Be mindful of water and electricity usage at lodges and camps.
  • Respect Wildlife: We encourage our guests to respect wildlife spaces and follow park rules given by our safari guides.

5. Monitoring and Reporting

Cheetah Safaris will publish an annual Impact Report detailing our progress on these pillars. We invite feedback from guests and partners to continuously improve our sustainable practices. Find more reports on our website, Impact and Sustainability Report.

In this case, we request our guests booking with us, to bring an extra back of supplies. This can be in terms of books, sports materials, and any other items that would change the lives of these kids.
