About Cottar’s Camp
Cottar’s Camp is an award-winning luxury safari camp that is located in the private Olderkesi Conservancy. The camp was established over 100 years ago by the Cottar family. It can hold a maximum of 28 guests ensuring a personal and intimate experience. The camp provides access to some iconic wildlife and landscape such as the big five, cheetahs, a diverse species of birds, the seasonal Great Migration and savannah plains.
It operates on sustainable energy and waste management systems with its eco-friendly design. The camp collaborates with the Maasai community to provide education, healthcare and employment opportunities.
Some activities include game drives, walking safaris, cultural visits, hot air balloon safaris, conservation and educational activities, bush dining and wellness activities.
ACCESS & LOCATION of Cottar’s Camp
Getting to Cottar’s Camp by air is the fastest and most convenient option. The nearest airstrips are Keekorok airstrip and Ol Kiombo airstri. There are daily scheduled flights from Nairobi’s Wilson airport to either airstrips, charter flights can be arranged as well. A flight from Nairobi to both is about 45 minutes to an hour.
The camp is 250 km away from Nairobi making the drive 5 to 6 hours depending on weather or road conditions. The drive will take you on a route via Narok town, passing through the Rift Valley and into the Maasai Mara region.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT Cottar’s Camp
There are 11 tents, 5 luxury double tents, 4 luxury family tented suites and 2 honeymoon tents.
The luxury double tents are a mix of old and new, there is Swala,Duma, Ddovu that’s new/replaced, kudu and Athi tents. The new tents are about 40% larger than the older tents. Interior wise there are wallpapered bathrooms, wooden flooring, bespoke furniture, siting/living area which includes a dining table and chairs, a writing desk and a daybed or couch.
As for the luxury family tented suites, they have a shared sitting/dining room and private ensuite dressing room and bathroom, main bedroom with veranda and a living room with a fireplace. The luxury honeymoon tent includes private en-suite dressing room and bathroom plus a main bedroom with veranda.
ACTIVITIES AT Cottar’s Camp
Wildlife Experience
There are game drives both day and night that give you the opportunity to see and observe the big five and other wildlife in there natural habitats while the night drives offer you a glimpse into the nocturnal behaviours of various animal species. Walking safaris that have you experiencing the wild while although experiencing the smaller ecosystems that you would often miss during the drives with the a guide. Balloon safaris are also available giving you the chance to experience the Maasai Mara from above.
Conservation and educational activities
There are several rehabilitation and conservation opportunities available. One being Raptor Rehabilitation Experience which will have you engaging with the Kenya Birds of Prey Trust and getting to learn about vulture rehabilitation and the importance of raptors in the ecosystem. The Female Conservation Ranger Interaction will have you spend time with the all female ranger unit as you get to understand their role in both wildlife protection and community engagement. Foraging and Medicinal Plant Walks has you discovering local medicinal plants and foraging practices all while gaining insight into the traditional knowledge and sustainability used of natural resources.
