Plan a Kenya Safari Around the Experience You Want

Reasons to Visit Kenya for Safari Holidays and Tours

Kenya offers an unusually diverse range of safari experiences within one country.

The Maasai Mara is renowned for big cats, abundant wildlife and the annual Great Wildebeest Migration. Amboseli National Park is famous for its elephant herds and views towards Mount Kilimanjaro. In northern Kenya, Samburu National Reserve offers a very different landscape and wildlife experience, while Laikipia, Lewa and Ol Pejeta provide access to private conservancies and important conservation areas.

Further east and south, Tsavo East and Tsavo West offer expansive wilderness and a different perspective on Kenya’s wildlife.

A Kenya safari can also include walking, horseback riding, hot-air ballooning, photography, cultural experiences and fly-in travel. For a longer journey, you can combine Kenya with Tanzania, Uganda or Rwanda, or finish your safari on the beaches of Diani, Watamu, Lamu or Zanzibar.

Cheetah Safaris plans these journeys from Kenya, combining local destination knowledge with safari logistics, accommodation, guiding and transportation to create an itinerary suited to the way you want to travel.

Why Choose Kenya for a Safari?

Kenya is one of Africa’s most versatile safari destinations because you can combine different ecosystems, wildlife experiences and styles of travel within a single itinerary.

Great Wildebeest Migration

The Maasai Mara forms part of the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem and is one of the key destinations for experiencing the Great Wildebeest Migration.

The migration is a year-round ecological cycle rather than a single event. In Kenya, the largest concentrations of migrating wildebeest and zebra are typically seen in the Maasai Mara between around July and October, although exact timing varies from year to year.

For travellers interested in the migration, choosing the right travel dates is only part of the decision. Camp location, length of stay, access to different areas, and whether you stay inside the reserve or in a private conservancy can all influence your experience.

Explore Great Migration Safaris

Big Five and Predator Safaris

Kenya offers excellent opportunities to see lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, alongside cheetahs, wild dogs, giraffes, hippos and hundreds of bird species.

The best destination depends on what you want to see.

The Maasai Mara is particularly strong for big cats and general game viewing. Amboseli is renowned for elephants. Ol Pejeta and Lewa are important destinations for rhino conservation, while Samburu offers wildlife adapted to the drier northern environment.

Rather than trying to see everything in one itinerary, we recommend selecting destinations according to your priorities.

Big Five Safaris You Can Customise

Private Conservancy Safaris

Kenya’s private and community conservancies can offer a different safari experience from national parks and reserves.

Depending on the conservancy, activities may include walking safaris, night drives, off-road wildlife viewing and other experiences that may not be available in the same way within national parks or reserves.

Conservancies can also provide a more private setting, with fewer vehicles in some areas and a stronger connection between tourism, conservation and surrounding communities.

Luxury Safari Camps and Lodges

Luxury on safari is about more than the quality of the room.

The location of your camp, the surrounding wildlife area, the quality of guiding, vehicle arrangements, privacy, activities and time spent travelling between destinations can have a greater effect on your overall experience.

We therefore select accommodation according to the role it plays in your itinerary — whether you want a private-use villa for a family, a tented camp close to wildlife, a high-end lodge with extensive facilities or an intimate conservancy camp designed around a more private safari experience.

Bush and Beach Holidays

Kenya makes it possible to combine a wildlife safari with time on the Indian Ocean coast.

Popular combinations include:

Culture and Community Experiences

Kenya’s safari landscapes are also home to communities with long-standing connections to these ecosystems.

Depending on your itinerary, you can include carefully selected cultural experiences with Maasai, Samburu and other communities.

We recommend experiences that give travellers an opportunity to learn about local traditions, livelihoods and contemporary community life rather than treating culture simply as a sightseeing activity.

Best Places to Go on Safari in Kenya

Kenya’s safari destinations are not interchangeable. Each offers a different combination of wildlife, scenery, activities and accommodation.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Best for: Great Wildebeest Migration, big cats, first-time safari travellers, photography and classic Kenya safaris.

The Maasai Mara is the destination most closely associated with Kenya’s Great Wildebeest Migration experience and is one of the country’s strongest areas for lion, leopard and cheetah sightings.

It can also be an excellent year-round safari destination outside the migration period, particularly for travellers interested in predators, resident wildlife and photography.

Best combined with: Amboseli, Laikipia, Samburu, Nairobi or the Kenyan coast.

Explore Maasai Mara Safaris

Amboseli National Park

Best for: Elephants, Mount Kilimanjaro views, photography and shorter Kenya safari itineraries.

Amboseli is particularly known for its large elephant herds and open landscapes with views towards Mount Kilimanjaro.

It works especially well as part of a southern Kenya itinerary with the Maasai Mara or as a shorter safari from Nairobi.

Best combined with: Maasai Mara, Tsavo or the Kenyan coast.

Explore Amboseli Safaris

Samburu National Reserve

Best for: Northern Kenya, specialist wildlife, landscapes and a different safari environment.

Samburu’s drier landscapes provide habitat for species associated with northern Kenya, including Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Somali ostrich and Beisa oryx.

The destination is particularly attractive to returning safari travellers who want to go beyond the classic Mara-Amboseli circuit.

Best combined with: Laikipia, Lewa or Nairobi.

Explore Samburu Safaris

Laikipia Conservancies

Best for: Private conservancy experiences, walking, wildlife, conservation and specialist safaris.

Laikipia is a large region rather than a single national park and includes several private and community conservation areas.

The area can be particularly well suited to travellers looking for a quieter safari, walking experiences, conservation-focused travel, horseback riding or a more flexible itinerary.

Best combined with: Samburu, Maasai Mara or Amboseli.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

Best for: Rhino conservation, wildlife and private conservancy experiences.

Lewa is an important wildlife conservation area and a strong choice for travellers interested in rhino, conservation and a more private safari environment.

Best combined with: Samburu, Laikipia or Maasai Mara.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Best for: Rhino, conservation, families and private safari experiences.

Ol Pejeta offers strong wildlife viewing alongside conservation-focused experiences and is one of the most useful destinations to consider for travellers interested in rhino conservation.

Best combined with: Laikipia, Samburu, Lake Nakuru or Maasai Mara.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Best for: Rhino, birdlife and a shorter safari stop.

Lake Nakuru offers a compact wildlife experience and is particularly known for black and white rhino, birdlife and its Rift Valley setting.

It can work well as part of a longer road safari between Nairobi and the Maasai Mara.

Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks

Best for: Large landscapes, elephants, wilderness and combining safari with the Kenyan coast.

Tsavo’s vast landscapes provide a very different experience from the Mara and northern Kenya.

For travellers staying on the coast, Tsavo can be particularly useful for creating a safari-and-beach itinerary without requiring extensive travel to the Maasai Mara.

Kenya Safari Experiences

A Kenya safari does not have to consist entirely of traditional game drives.

Private Game Drives

A private safari vehicle gives you greater control over your daily schedule during game drives or transfers and allows your guide to adjust the pace according to your interests.

This can be particularly useful for families, photographers, couples and travellers with specific wildlife interests.

Hot-Air Balloon Safari

A hot-air balloon safari provides an aerial perspective over the Mara landscape, usually around sunrise, followed by a landing and breakfast.

It is particularly popular with couples, honeymooners and photographers.

Walking Safaris

Walking offers an opportunity to observe the finer details of the ecosystem: tracks, plants, insects, birds, and animal behaviour, rather than viewing the landscape only from a vehicle.

Walking Safaris are generally conducted in appropriate areas with qualified guides and are subject to local regulations and conditions.

Horseback Safaris

Horseback riding can provide a different way to experience selected conservancies and wildlife areas.

It is best suited to travellers with appropriate riding experience and should be planned around the destination and camp.

Wildlife Photography Safaris

Photography-focused itineraries can be designed around the species, landscapes and photographic opportunities that matter most to you.

The itinerary may consider vehicle configuration, camp location, time in the field, private guiding and the seasonal movement of wildlife.

Cultural Experiences

Cultural visits can be incorporated into a safari when appropriate to the route and community.

The focus should be on learning and respectful interaction rather than simply adding a cultural stop to an itinerary.

Scenic and Charter Flights

Flying between safari destinations can reduce long road transfers and allow you to spend more time in the wilderness.

Fly-in safaris are particularly useful when combining geographically distant destinations or when travelling with limited time.

How Much Does a Kenya Safari Cost?

The cost of a Kenya safari depends on the time of year, accommodation, length of stay, travel style, and the level of exclusivity you choose. As a general guide, Kenya safari prices range from around US$650 to more than US$3,500 per person per day, with peak-season Great Migration safaris and highly exclusive experiences typically costing more.

Safari StyleIndicative Cost per Person/DayWhat Usually Affects the Price
Comfortable / Mid-Range SafariUS$650–1,500Quality lodges or tented camps, road transfers, shared or private game drives
Luxury SafariUS$1,500–3,500+Luxury camps and lodges, prime wildlife locations, private vehicles and premium experiences
Exclusive / Fly-In SafariUS$2,500–3,500+Charter or scheduled flights, private-use properties, exclusive guiding and bespoke activities

What Affects the Cost of a Kenya Safari?

Several factors can significantly influence the total price of a Kenya safari:

  • Season and travel dates – Peak periods, particularly July to October during the Great Migration, generally command higher rates.
  • Number of travellers – Travelling as a couple, family or private group can change the per-person cost, particularly when using private vehicles.
  • Accommodation – Safari camps, lodges, private villas and exclusive-use properties have different price levels.
  • Private or shared game drives – A private 4×4 vehicle and dedicated guide provide greater flexibility but increase the overall cost.
  • Road or fly-in safari – Flying between Nairobi and safari destinations saves travel time and can provide a more seamless luxury experience, but usually costs more than road transfers.
  • Park and conservancy fees – Conservation and park fees vary between destinations and can form a significant part of the safari cost.
  • Number of safari nights – Longer itineraries generally increase the total cost, although the average daily cost can vary depending on the accommodation and activities selected.
  • Internal flights – Scheduled flights and private charters add to the overall cost but can make a multi-destination safari more comfortable and efficient.
  • Specialist safari experiences – Hot-air balloon safaris, private bush dining, horseback safaris, helicopter excursions and specialist photography experiences can increase the price.
  • Private guiding – Specialist guides or private guiding arrangements offer a more personalised experience and may carry an additional cost.
  • Beach extensions – Adding destinations such as the Kenyan coast or Zanzibar will increase the overall trip cost but creates a popular bush-and-beach itinerary.
  • Family and group arrangements – Connecting rooms, family suites, private villas and exclusive-use camps can affect the price of a family or multigenerational safari.

For example, a seven-night luxury Kenya safari during the peak Great Migration season can cost considerably more than a ten-night green-season safari using a combination of comfortable lodges and tented camps. The number of nights alone does not determine the price; the destination, accommodation, transport and experiences selected are equally important.

How Much Does a Kenya Safari Cost?

The cost of a Kenya safari depends on the season, accommodation style, destinations, and whether you travel by road or fly-in. On average, prices range from USD 650 to over USD 3,500 per person per day, with the highest rates during the Great Migration (July to October).

A premium, highly personalised experience with exclusive lodges, private conservancies, and fly-in routes that maximise time in the wild. Often includes balloon safaris, bush breakfasts, sundowners, and private guiding.

Family Kenya Safaris

Kenya works particularly well for family safaris because itineraries can combine wildlife, culture, outdoor activities and beach time. For families, we consider the children’s ages when selecting camps, room configurations, drive lengths and activities.

A private safari vehicle can also give families greater flexibility during game drives. Younger children may benefit from shorter drives and camps with dedicated children’s activities, while older children can often take part in walking, horseback or conservation experiences where age policies allow.

Safari and Beach Holidays

A wildlife safari in the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, or Samburu, followed by the beaches of Diani, Watamu, Malindi, or Lamu — the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.

Combine Kenya with Other African Destinations

Kenya pairs easily with other African countries thanks to regional flights and well-connected borders. From East Africa’s golden savannahs to the deserts of the south, multi-country trips offer an extraordinary range of landscapes.

  • Kenya and Tanzania: the classic combination for the migration and the Big Five, often extended to Zanzibar for beaches. A typical 10–14 day plan covers the Mara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater.
  • Kenya with Uganda or Rwanda: add gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Volcanoes, with direct flights from Nairobi to Entebbe and Kigali.
  • Kenya with Southern Africa: extend to Victoria Falls (Zambia and Zimbabwe), Kruger in South Africa, or the dunes of the Namib Desert in Namibia for a “desert and drama” contrast to the Mara.

Kenya Safari Tips: Know Before You Go

Kenya Travel Guides and what you need to know

A little planning makes a Kenya safari far more rewarding. Our experts support you from first enquiry to your return home.

What to Pack

Pack lightly so you can move easily between destinations. Choose lightweight clothing in neutral colours such as khaki, beige, and green, with long-sleeved shirts and trousers for sun and insect protection. Mornings and evenings can be cool, so add a fleece, a light jacket, and a beanie. See our full Kenya safari packing list for details.

When to Visit

Knowing the best time to visit Kenya helps you match your trip to the experience you want, whether that is the dry-season migration or the quieter, greener low season. If the migration is your priority, plan around July to October.

Travel Documents

Once you have booked your safari, make sure you are travel-ready. You will need a valid Kenya eVisa and a passport valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry. A yellow fever vaccination is recommended.

Kenya Safari Health and Safety

Kenya has established safari tourism infrastructure, but conditions vary between destinations and travellers should follow current travel and health advice before departure.

During your safari, your guide and local operating team will advise you on wildlife safety, transfers and activities. We also provide practical pre-travel guidance covering packing, travel documents and other preparation requirements.

For medical, vaccination, and travel-health advice, consult a qualified travel-health professional before travelling.

Why Book Your Kenya Safari With Cheetah Safaris?

Choosing a Kenya safari company is about more than finding a lodge and arranging a vehicle. The quality of your safari depends on how well the destinations, camps, guides, flights, road transfers and daily activities work together.

Cheetah Safaris is a locally owned Kenya-based safari DMC. Our team plans and operates private and tailor-made safaris across Kenya, using local destination knowledge to match each itinerary to the traveller rather than following a standard route.

Kenya-Based Destination Knowledge

Our team works from Kenya and understands the practical differences between the country’s safari regions. The Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Laikipia, Tsavo and Kenya’s other wildlife areas each offer a different combination of landscapes, wildlife, accommodation and safari activities.

That local knowledge helps us recommend destinations according to what you actually want from your trip — whether your priority is the Great Wildebeest Migration, big cats, elephants, rhino conservation, photography, family travel, walking safaris or a quieter private-conservancy experience.

Safari Planning Based on Your Travel Goals

We do not believe that every traveller needs the same Kenya itinerary.

A first-time visitor may want the Maasai Mara and Amboseli. A returning safari traveller may prefer Samburu and Laikipia. A family may need shorter game drives and carefully selected camps, while a photographer may prioritise wildlife-rich areas, specialist guiding and time in the field.

We build the route around your interests, travel dates, group size, preferred pace and accommodation preferences before recommending the destinations and logistics that fit.

Private and Tailor-Made Kenya Safaris

Our Kenya safaris can be designed as private journeys, with the itinerary adapted to your preferred pace and interests.

Depending on the destination, your safari can include a private vehicle and guide, fly-in transfers, luxury tented camps or lodges, private conservancies, walking or horseback experiences, photography activities, cultural visits and beach extensions.

This gives you more control over how you spend your time in Kenya rather than fitting your holiday around a fixed group itinerary.

Local Safari Operations and Logistics

A Kenya safari involves more than game drives. Your journey may include international airport transfers, domestic flights, charter flights, safari vehicles, lodge transfers, park or conservancy arrangements and multiple accommodation providers.

Our operations team coordinates these moving parts as one itinerary, helping your journey run smoothly from arrival in Kenya through to your departure.

Where flying between destinations makes more sense than a long road transfer, we can build that into the itinerary. Where a road journey adds value to the experience, we can recommend that instead.

Experienced Safari Guides

Your guide is one of the most important parts of a Kenya safari.

Cheetah Safaris operates with its own professional safari guides, with the company currently listing 15 guides in Kenya and 12 in Tanzania. Our guide team includes experienced professionals such as Alexander Ngunjiri, listed with 23 years of experience, and Evans Thubuku, listed with 25 years of experience.

Rather than simply driving between wildlife sightings, a good guide helps you understand animal behaviour, tracks, habitats, landscapes and the wider ecosystem. For families, photographers and specialist-interest travellers, the guide can also help shape the pace and focus of the game drives.

Conservation and Community Connections

Wildlife tourism in Kenya is closely connected to conservation and the communities living alongside wildlife.

We include conservation and community considerations when recommending destinations and experiences. Kenya’s private and community conservancies demonstrate how tourism, wildlife protection and local livelihoods can be connected, while community-led conservation initiatives across the country support local participation in protecting wildlife and habitat.

Where appropriate, we can include conservation-focused visits and community experiences as part of your itinerary, giving travellers a better understanding of the people and organisations working to protect Kenya’s wildlife landscapes.

Support Before and During Your Safari

Your relationship with Cheetah Safaris does not end when you receive your itinerary.

Our safari team helps you prepare for your journey, including practical questions about accommodation, transport, packing and travel arrangements. Once you arrive in Kenya, our local operations and guiding teams coordinate the safari on the ground.

Because we operate in the destination, we can respond to the practical issues that arise during an African journey rather than leaving you to coordinate between separate overseas suppliers.

A Kenya Safari Built Around You

Whether you are planning your first African safari, returning for the Great Wildebeest Migration, travelling with children, celebrating a honeymoon or anniversary, photographing wildlife, or combining Kenya with Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda or the Indian Ocean coast, we start with the experience you want.

Tell us your travel dates, interests, group size and preferred safari style, and our Kenya-based team will recommend an itinerary that fits.

Financial Protection

You are guranteed of a safe, and peace of mind booking process, and as well safari payments. We ensure that your payments are secure and safe.

Yes. Kenya is particularly suitable for first-time safari travellers because it offers a wide range of wildlife experiences, well-established safari infrastructure and destinations that can be combined into relatively straightforward itineraries.

For a first safari, the Maasai Mara is often a strong starting point, while Amboseli, Ol Pejeta, Samburu or a private conservancy can be added depending on your interests.

The best destination depends on what you want to experience.

Maasai Mara: Great Migration and big cats
Amboseli: Elephants and Mount Kilimanjaro
Samburu: Northern Kenya and specialist wildlife
Laikipia: Private conservancies and specialist experiences
Ol Pejeta: Rhino and conservation
Lewa: Rhino, wildlife and conservancy experiences
Lake Nakuru: Rhino and birdlife
Tsavo: Large landscapes, elephants and coast combinations

A Kenya safari typically ranges from around US$650 to more than US$3,500 per person per day, depending on accommodation, season, transport, group size and activities.

Luxury and peak-season safaris can cost significantly more than mid-range itineraries, while private conservancy stays and fly-in safaris can also increase the overall cost.

The best way to establish an accurate price is to build the itinerary around your dates and requirements rather than relying on a generic daily rate.

Kenya can be visited throughout the year.

For traditional dry-season safari conditions and the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Maasai Mara, July to October is one of the most popular periods.

April and May are wetter and generally quieter, while November and December bring shorter rains and greener landscapes.

The best month depends on whether your priority is migration, general wildlife, photography, lower visitor numbers or specific activities.

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a year-round movement across the wider Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

In Kenya, the main migration period in the Maasai Mara is generally July to October, although timing varies according to rainfall, food availability, and the movement of the herds.

River crossings are spectacular but unpredictable. No safari company can guarantee that a crossing will occur during a particular game drive.

For a first Kenya safari, 7–10 days is a useful starting point.

A shorter three- or four-day itinerary can focus on one destination, while eight to ten days allows you to combine two or three contrasting areas.

If you want northern Kenya, multiple conservancies, specialist activities or a beach extension, consider 10–14 days or longer.

Yes.

The Maasai Mara has substantial resident wildlife and is not dependent on the migration for good safari experiences.

Outside the main migration period, travellers can still enjoy excellent opportunities for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes and other wildlife.

Travelling outside peak migration season can also mean fewer visitors and different accommodation availability.

A national park or reserve is a protected wildlife area managed under the relevant public or reserve management framework.

A private or community conservancy is generally managed through a partnership involving landowners, communities and conservation or tourism organisations.

The safari experience can differ too. Depending on local rules, conservancies may allow activities such as walking or night drives that are more restricted in national parks or reserves.

Kenya’s wildlife conservation system includes both state-managed protected areas and community-led conservancies.

For many travellers, yes.

A private vehicle gives you greater control over your schedule and allows your guide to adapt the safari around your interests.

It can be particularly valuable for families, photographers, honeymooners and travellers who want longer wildlife sightings without having to follow another group’s preferences.

Shared vehicles can be a good alternative for travellers who prioritise budget.

Yes.

Popular combinations include:

Amboseli + Diani Beach

Yes, provided the itinerary and accommodation are selected around the children’s ages and needs.

Families may benefit from a private vehicle, shorter travel days, family rooms or private villas and camps that offer appropriate children’s activities.

For younger children, we recommend limiting long road transfers and choosing camps carefully because age restrictions vary between properties.

Yes.

Scheduled safari flights and private charters can connect Nairobi with destinations such as the Maasai Mara, Samburu, Amboseli and other safari areas.

Flying is particularly useful when you want to reduce road travel and maximise time in the wilderness.

Pack lightweight clothing, neutral colours, comfortable shoes, a warm layer for early mornings, a rain jacket, sun protection, insect repellent, binoculars, camera equipment and personal medication.

For flying safaris, check baggage restrictions before departure because small aircraft generally have stricter luggage limits than international flights.

Kenya Safari Packing List

Kenya is a well-established safari destination and millions of travellers visit its parks, reserves and conservancies.

However, safety is not something to treat as a blanket guarantee. Conditions can vary by location, and travellers should follow their safari operator’s instructions, observe wildlife safety rules and check current official travel advice before departure.

Your itinerary should also take account of road conditions, flights, accommodation and any health requirements relevant to your journey.
