Kigarama Wilderness Lodge is directly accessible by road via the main Kampala–Masaka–Mbarara highway. Because it sits on the mainland hillside just outside the park boundaries, you can drive straight to the reception parking lot without needing a boat or ferry transfer.
Driving from Kampala or Entebbe (3.5 to 4 Hours)
The Route: Head southwest out of Kampala on the smooth, fully tarmacked highway toward Masaka. You will cross the Equator line at Kayabwe along this stretch.
Distance: Approximately 230 kilometers.
Road Condition: Excellent, high-quality asphalt for the first 228 kilometers along the main highway.
The Final Stretch: Turning off at Sanga (10 Minutes)
The final turn-off to the lodge is incredibly straightforward compared to other wilderness lodges:
The Landmark: Drive past Lyantonde town and continue until you reach Sanga Trading Centre. Look for the large, prominent signs for Lake Mburo National Park and Kigarama Wilderness Lodge.
Left Turn: Turn left at Sanga town onto the dirt/murram road that leads toward the park gate.
The Dirt Road: Drive for just 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles) up the scenic hill. The lodge entrance is located on your right, exactly 1 kilometer before you reach the official Sanga Gate entry of Lake Mburo National Park.
Vehicle Recommendation: While a 4×4 is always recommended for safaris inside the national park, the short dirt road from the highway to Kigarama Lodge is well-maintained and easily navigable by standard vehicles year-round.
Driving from Bwindi or Kabale (3 to 4 Hours)
If you are breaking up a long journey from a gorilla trek, head northeast via Mbarara town. Continue east along the main highway toward Kampala for about 35 kilometers until you reach Sanga Trading Centre, then make a right turn onto the park access road.
To reach Kigarama Wilderness Lodge by air, you will take a 35-to-40-minute domestic charter flight followed by a 40-minute ground transfer. Because Lake Mburo National Park does not have an active airfield inside its official borders, travelers utilize the closest regional aviation hub.
Primary Arrival Airstrip: Mbarara (Nyakisharara).
The official landing destination for the lodge is the Nyakisharara Airstrip (often referred to simply as the Mbarara Airstrip) located in Mbarara.
Flight Dynamics & Operators.
The Flight: Domestic flights depart from Entebbe International Airport (EBB) or Kajjansi Airfield. The flight time across southwestern Uganda is incredibly short, taking roughly 35 minutes
Airlines: Scheduled regional “seat-rate” flights to Mbarara are highly limited compared to busier safari tracks like Bwindi or Murchison Falls. Most travelers book private air charters through domestic operators such as Bar Aviation or via specialized safari packages arranged by Eco Adventures Safaris.
The Final Ground Transfer.
The Drive: Upon touching down at Nyakisharara Airstrip, your pre-arranged 4×4 safari vehicle will pick you up directly from the tarmac. You will complete a 40-minute road transfer (~56 km) driving east along the smooth, paved Kampala–Mbarara Highway.
Lodge Proximity: You will turn off the main highway at the Sanga Trading Center. Kigarama Wilderness Lodge sits on an elevated hill just 1 kilometer outside the park’s main Sanga Gate, making it instantly accessible from the road

While staying at Kigarama Wilderness Lodge, you might be wondering what activities you can engage in. Below we have listed some of the top safari accommodations you can book and do while staying at Kigarama Wilderness Lodge.
Kigarama Wilderness Lodge operates as a premier eco-friendly base camp on the immediate outskirts of Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, offering a diverse combination of traditional wildlife safaris, active outdoor sports, and deep cultural immersion. Located on an elevated hill just 1 km from the park’s main Sanga Gate, the lodge coordinates activities directly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
Traditional Wildlife Safaris.
Day Game Drives: Embark on morning or late afternoon 4×4 safaris across the acacia-dotted savannahs. Because Lake Mburo is the only national park in western Uganda containing the rare impala antelope, these drives offer a targeted opportunity to spot them alongside huge herds of zebras, elands, topis, cape buffaloes, and Rothschild’s giraffes
Night Game Drives: Pre-arranged spotlight safaris entering the park after dark. This is the most effective way to track nocturnal predators like leopards, spotted hyenas, side-striped jackals, and bushbabies
Lake Mburo Boat Cruises: A 2-to-3-hour relaxing launch safari across the calm waters of Lake Mburo. Guests get a front-row seat to massive pods of hippos, basking Nile crocodiles, and iconic waterbirds like the elusive African Finfoot and the White-backed Night Heron.
Active & Foot-Based Wilderness Exploration.
Guided Walking Safaris: Step out on foot accompanied by an armed UWA park ranger. Since Lake Mburo doesn’t host elephants or lions, walking safaris are incredibly safe and uniquely intimate, allowing you to track animal footprints and study medicinal savanna plants up close
Cycling/Mountain Biking Safaris: The lodge provides on-site mountain bike hires, letting adventure enthusiasts ride along specialized park and community boundary trails surrounded by grazing zebras and antelopes.
Horseback Riding Safaris: Arranged in partnership with park stables, riders can silently explore the open plains on horseback without the intrusive sound of a vehicle engine. This allows you to blend in seamlessly with herds of wild zebras and elands.
Premium Avian Birdwatching: Guided birding walks along the hillsides or lake swamps. The region supports over 350 distinct bird species, including the African Fish Eagle, crested cranes, and various kingfishers
Immersive Bahima Cultural Initiatives.
Managed under the Uganda Cultural Lodges group, the property excels at interactive, community-led activities right at its doorstep:
Ankole Cattle Interaction: Travel to a nearby pastoralist community to learn about the heritage of the famous long-horned Ankole cattle. Guests can physically try their hand at traditional cow milking, herding, and processing dairy products.
Traditional Cooking Lessons: Work with the local chefs to learn the precise culinary process behind authentic southwestern Ugandan wood-fire dishes.
Village Walks & Storytelling: Guided walking tours through the nearby trading center to view local crafts, culminating in an evening session of ancient storytelling and traditional dances led by Bahima community elders.
On-Site Relaxation & Leisure.
The Ridge Swimming Pool: Cool off from the equatorial midday heat in the resort’s elevated outdoor swimming pool, positioned to offer 180-degree panoramic views over the national park valleys below.
Sunset & Photography Moments: The lodge’s west-facing viewing verandas and terrace bars provide optimal conditions for capturing wildlife silhouettes during the golden hour.
Nightly Storytelling Bonfires: Gather around the central outdoor fire pit after dinner to relax, stargaze, and listen to the nocturnal calls of the savanna wild.
