Discover Nyerere National Park
Now the Largest National Park in Africa, Nyerere National Park is a newly established Park that is part of what is known as Selous Game Reserve. The name of the Park is given in honor of the founder of the Nation, the Late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.
The Park was established in year 2019 and covers an area of over 30,000 square kilometers. With its largest wilderness area in Africa, Nyerere National Park has relatively undisturbed ecological and biological processes, including a diverse range of wildlife with significant predator and prey relationships.
The mighty Rufiji River with its renowned population of hippos and rhinos flows to the Indian Ocean. The river has been designated as a photographic zone and is a popular tourist destination. The sheer volume of game in the Nyerere is just outstanding!
Elephants, buffalo, and lions are found in greater numbers, and the park, together with the remaining part of Selous has the last true stronghold for African wild dogs. Visitors to this vast park will be able to enjoy the widest diversity of safari activities in the country, like boating safaris as well as standard game drives, walking safaris, and legendary fly camping trips.

You can generate a permit ticket at the park entrance gates and pay using your preferred payment method like credit card or M-pesa.

Some parks accept payments at the entrance via mobile money or credit cards. Always ask your Tour operator, our team member, or the national park authority to check if you can pay at the park gates.
Most National Parks accept major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard. American Express is not recommended.
Most national parks do not accept Cash payments; if it happens they do, then it should be in both Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) or USD.
Best Time to Visit Nyerere National Park
Generally, Tanzania is best to visit in the dry-season months of July – October when the parks are dry and wildlife viewing is dramatic, easy, and action-packed.

How to Get to Nyerere National Park
The park can be accessed by road, air, and rail. By road, the drive from Dar es Salaam to the Matambwe or Mtemere Gate takes about 5 to 6 hours. The roads are rough, especially in the rainy season, making a 4WD vehicle essential. Visitors can also take a bus to Morogoro or Kisaki, then arrange for a transfer to the park.
For a faster and more convenient option, daily charter flights operate from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Arusha, and Ruaha to Mtemere Airstrip, located near the park’s entrance. The flight takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. Additionally, visitors can take a scenic train journey from Dar es Salaam to Kisaki Station, which is near the park, followed by a short drive to the entrance.
