Discover Tarangire National Park
Ranking as the 6th largest National Park in all of Tanzania, Tarangire National Park covers an area of 2,600 sq. kilometers. It is part of the nothern safari circuit which is inclusive of other parks like Serengeti, Ngorongoro crater and lake Manyara. The park is famous for its large herds and mini-wildlife migration that occurs during the dry season which sees about 250,000 animals making entry into the park due to the permanent Tarangire River which remains as the only source of water in the dry season.
In terms of wildlife several herds are present with up to 300 members per herd. There are large numbers of impalas, elands, buffaloes, giraffes, Bohor reedbuck, Coke’s hartebeest, Thompson’s gazelle, the greater and lesser kudu, leopards, lions, hyenas, and cheetah. Tarangire is home to over 545 species with the stunning yellow collared lovebirds and shy starlings visible and in plenty.

Best Time to Visit Tarangire National Park
- Dry Season (June to October): This is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around the river and waterholes. there is also the seasonal migration that sees several animals making entry into the park.
- Wet Season (November to May): Best time for birdwatching, as many migratory birds are present.
March to May
Fewer tourists visit during this time due to the weather, making it a quieter experience.
June to October
Tourist numbers increase significantly as the dry weather offers more reliable conditions for safaris.
July to August and December
This is the busiest time of year for the park. Many tourists visit during these months due to the favorable weather and holiday seasons.
How to Get to Tarangire National Park
By Road
Tarangire is about 120 kilometers southwest of Arusha, making the drive approximately 2 to 3 hours. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy season.
By Air
There are daily flights from Arusha and other major Tanzanian cities to the nearby Kuro Airstrip, which is about 10 kilometers from the park.
