Safari Overview
Begin your journey in Aberdare National Park, staying at the famous Ark Lodge, overlooking a floodlit waterhole that attracts wildlife throughout the night. Continue to Meru National Park, a diverse and less crowded wilderness made famous by George and Joy Adamson and home to one of Kenya’s leading rhino sanctuaries. Here, explore rivers, woodlands, and savannahs with excellent chances of spotting elephants, cheetahs, giraffes, and large buffalo herds. The safari then moves to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary and home to the last two northern white rhinos. Alongside rhinos, you’ll enjoy rewarding sightings of lions, hyenas, giraffes, and zebras across its open plains. Comfortable stays, scenic drives, and rewarding game experiences make this safari a perfect mix of wilderness adventure and conservation insight before returning to Nairobi.
Safari Itinerary
6 Days 5 nights Aberdares Meru National Park Safari
-
On the first day of safari, start your drive to the Aberdare Mountain Ranges. The Aberdare National Park was created in 1950 to protect the forested slopes of the ancient Aberdare Range, with wildlife ranging from elephant and lion to the black and white Colobus monkey and beautiful but lesser-sighted bongo – a horned antelope with distinctive white stripes.
Upon arrival at the Aberdare National Park, you’ll check in at the Aberdare Country Club in order to transfer to its unique sister property, The Ark, which will be your viewing perch for the night. In the heart of the Aberdare National Park, The Ark’s design is based on Noah’s Ark. It overlooks a floodlit waterhole and salt lick, attracting wildlife day and night.
Aberdare National Park is home to four of the Big Five (no lions), but it is not a typical Big Five destination. Sightings of elephant and buffalo are almost guaranteed. Black rhino are sometimes spotted at one of the tree hotels’ floodlit waterholes at night. Leopard, including the melanistic leopard (a black variant), are very rarely seen. Bushbuck and defassa waterbuck are very common.
Four viewing decks with balconies allow up-close wildlife viewing without even leaving your accommodation. There’s also a ground-level photo hide and an on-call viewing service to ensure that you don’t miss a thing. You will explore the park to get enough of it.

On this day, we will explore one of the most underrated Parks in Kenya which offers great game and is home to the big five.
The scenery is diverse from the well-watered eastern side of Mount Kenya, Meru is cut through by numerous permanent streams and rivers, and features swamps and riverine woodland in its vegetation. Made famous as the region where George and Joy Adamson released Elsa the lioness.
Meru is also famous for having one of Kenya’s foremost rhino sanctuaries, where black and white rhinos have bred successfully for many years. You will spend your safari watching the rhinos, elephants, cheetahs, lions or the reticulated giraffe, or witnessing huge herds of buffalo trundling through the bush, all with no more than a handful of other visitors’ vehicles in the area as it is one of the not crowded parks in Kenya.
