Il Ngwesi Community Conservancy is a community-owned and managed wildlife conservancy in Laikipia County, Kenya. Covering approximately 8,645 hectares (21,377 acres), the conservancy is a pioneer in eco-tourism and sustainable conservation, providing a habitat for diverse wildlife while benefiting the local Maasai community. Established in the 1990s, Il Ngwesi stands out as a successful example of community-led conservation where wildlife and people coexist harmoniously.

The conservancy is home to iconic African wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, leopards, and buffalos. It is also one of the few places in Kenya where visitors can see the black rhino in a community-managed setting. Il Ngwesi is committed to preserving its natural resources through low-impact tourism, ensuring that revenue generated benefits the local Maasai people through education, healthcare, and livelihood projects.

Best Time to Visit Il Ngwesi Community Conservancy

Il Ngwesi is a year-round destination, but the best time depends on the activities you want to experience.

Low Season

April to May, November to December

Heavy rains can make roads difficult to navigate. Lush vegetation, but wildlife is more scattered. Fewer visitors, ideal for a peaceful safari.

High Season

January to March, June to October

Dry season makes wildlife spotting easier as animals gather around water sources. Comfortable temperatures and clear skies for outdoor activities. Best time for walking safaris and cultural visits.

Peak Season

July to September, December holidays

Increased tourism, especially during Christmas and the Great Migration period. Higher accommodation demand, so advance booking is recommended. Best time for game drives, photography, and stargazing.

How to get to Il Ngwesi Community Conservancy

By Road

The journey from Nairobi to Il Ngwesi takes about 5 to 6 hours by car. The best route is via Nanyuki, passing through Timau and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy before reaching Il Ngwesi. A 4×4 vehicle is required, especially during the rainy season when roads can be muddy.

By Air

There is a private airstrip at Il Ngwesi, mainly used for chartered flights. Scheduled flights are available to Nanyuki Airstrip from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, followed by a 2 hour drive to the conservancy.
