Hot, dry, remote, and unspoiled, this reserve is designated a Wilderness Activity Zone and allows for fly camping, fishing, camel, and horseback safaris for the intrepid visitor. Mwingi National Reserve is one of the three Kenya reserves located in the Meru Conservation Area (MCA) in North Eastern Kenya. This reserve shares borders with Kora National Park located in Tana River County, Meru National Park located in Meru County, and finally Bisandi National reserve located in Isiolo County.
The total area covered by the Mwingi reserve is 745 square kilometers in a landscape that majorly comprises of open savannah, acacia woodlands, commiphora, luggas, and rivers. The total area covered by the Meru Conservation Area is estimated to be 4400sq km
