All About Suguta Valley

Discover Lake Logipi in Northen Kenya

Suguta Valley and Mount Nyiro found in Samburu Region

The Suguta Valley, also known as the Suguta Mud Flats, is an arid part of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya (Africa), directly south of Lake Turkana. It is located in the Rift Valley between Lake Baringo and Lake Turkana. This area is largely inhabited by the Turkana people and features stunning landscapes, including deserts, volcanic peaks, salt lakes, and rugged lava terrains.

Often referred to as ‘the valley of death’ because of its desolate and stark terrain that extends as far as the eye can see. Its remote location makes ground access challenging, making air travel the best way to witness the grandeur of Cathedral Rock, the flocks of flamingos at Lake Logipi, and the stunning dunes, along with the unique mushroom-shaped rocks found in the Suguta Desert.

The Suguta Valley features a relatively level floor situated approximately 300 meters above sea level. To the east and west, the land ascends to 1,000 meters and is scattered with volcanic cinder cones. The Barrier Volcano acts as a separator between the valley and Lake Turkana.

To the east of Suguta Valley, Mount Nyiro, considered a sacred mountain by the Samburu people, rises prominently. Another ancient volcano, Namarunu, extends into Suguta Valley from its western flank.

Lake Logipi has a maximum depth of 3 to 5 m, and is about 6 km wide by 3 km long. Its waters are of sodium bicarbonate composition with a pH of 9.5-10.5 and salinity (total dissolved salts) that varies from less than 20 g/l to greater than 50 g/l. Efflorescent salt crusts (trona) are present around its margins.

Flamingoes frequently inhabit the saline waters feeding on cyanobacteria (Arthrospira spp. – formerly termed Spirulina) and other plankton. Lake Turkana extended after extreme rainfalls in 2020 and overflowed Lake Logipi.

Efflorescent salt crusts (Trona, the name is a sort of anagram of natron due to the sodium richness of this mineral) are present around its margins. Flamingos often inhabit these saline waters feeding on cyanobacteria (Arthrospira spp. – previously called Spirulina algae) and other plankton.

Lake Logipi is a saline, alkaline lake that lies at the northern end of the arid Suguta Valley in the northern Kenya Rift. It is separated from Lake Turkana by the Barrier Volcanic Complex, a group of young volcanoes that last erupted during the late 19th century or early 20th century.

Saline hot springs discharge on the northern shoreline of Lake Logipi and at Cathedral Rocks near its southern limit, and help to maintain water at times of extreme aridity. Flamingoes frequently inhabit the saline waters

Where is Suguta Valley Located on Map?

Location of Suguta Valley on map - How to get to Suguta Valley or Mount Nyiro

The Suguta Valley is positioned along the center of the Gregory Rift, which has experienced faulting in this region since the Pliocene within a 35-kilometer (22-mile) wide zone. This zone is situated between the Ngiro basement uplift to the east and the Loriu Plateau to the west, with a greater thickness observed in the eastern section. The exposed volcanic formations consist of basalts, tuffs, and ash that were produced between 4.2 and 3.8 million years ago, along with remnants of trachytic volcanism occurring from 3.8 to 2.6 million years ago, and basaltic and alkali basaltic rocks formed from that time to the present day. In the early Pliocene, the primary direction of least horizontal stress—indicative of rift expansion—was directed from northwest to southeast.

Suguta Valley is located north of Kenya, approximately 400 Km away from Nairobi if you travel by road, and 1.5 hours on flight. It can be accessed both by flight and by road. To get to Suguta Valley by road, you will use Nairobi to Nanyuki to Samburu to Wamba Road, and divert to Suguta Valley. The road from Wamba is all rough road, and can be worse towards the valley, hence we recommend a 4×4 vehicle with high ground clearance to maneuver easily.

The coordinate of Suguta Valley on Map is 2°05′28″N 36°30′49″E / 2.091058°N.
