This National Park is Located in

Solio Ranch Conservancy – Nyeri, Laikipia is a privately-owned wildlife conservancy in the Greater Laikipia Region, located between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains. The 17,500 acre reserve is filled with acacia forest, traversed by a river center to the conservancy.

Solio Ranch Conservancy plays a major part in the protection and breeding of black rhinos, recognized as one of the most successful in Kenya. The animals live in harmony with other wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, buffalo, zebra, and giraffes. The park also offers some of the best leopard viewing in the country and is an ideal place for bird-watching.

Solio Ranch borders the famous Conservancies, Lewa Conservancy and Olepejta Conservancy. It’s well situated with great views of the second-highest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kenya. It’s the only conservancy in Kenya to Spot Rhinos and Lions in Huge Numbers.

The Solio Game Reserve (or Solio Ranch Conservancy) used to be a working cattle ranch but in 1973 part of it was turned into a wildlife sanctuary. The result: rhinos, pride of lions, and other wildlife came back to the area. Nowadays, it’s a 49,000-acre ranch with 19,000 acres of wildlife sanctuary for black and white rhinos.

Understand when to Visit Solio Game Reserve For Safaris

You can visit Solio Ranch at any time or season of the year. The roads are well-graded, access is well-planned, and game drives are easy. The average temperature at Solio is between lows of 15 Degrees and highs of 25 Degrees. It is recommended that you visit Solio Ranch and Lodge during the January to March season to combine a tour from Giraffe Manor Nairobi to Solio Lodge in Northern Kenya.

Road access is quite good and well-managed. It’s accessible throughout the year.

January – March

  • This season is the best since the conservancy is hot and after short rains in December. The Conservancy gets lush green and attracts a lot of wildlife, and makes it easier to spot wildlife since the grass is not that tall, but green.

April to June

  • Known as the green season, is when the long rains in Kenya start, and lodges and camps in this region are hard to access. Therefore they all close down and most of them take advantage to renovate them as they await the peak season from July to October.

July to October

  • It’s the busiest and most loved season. Known as the peak season, when visitors from all over the world visit Kenya for summer seasons and holidays. The Season starts with the cold month of July and gets hot in Aug to Oct. Short rains in Kenya start between Oct to Dec.

November to Dec

  • The short rains start this time and they rain till the end of Dec at times. It’s not a good time to visit Lewa Conservancy since the roads get messy during this time.
