All About Mathews Range

Discover Northen Kenya - Mathews Range Samburu

Mathews Range found in Samburu Region

The verdant Mathews Ranges lies between Laikipia and Kenya’s northern border. Spanning approximately 150 kilometers, it is remote and largely untouched. This area is a true wilderness. The Mathews mountain range is a secluded retreat for those fortunate enough to explore it. The forest provides an excellent opportunity for hiking through riverine valleys and crossing streams, guided by local Samburu people.

The wildlife in this area tends to be elusive. However, if you are fortunate, you may encounter elephants, which can be a thrilling experience. The forest teems with life, and particularly for bird enthusiasts, there are chances to spot Turacos. On a lucky day on a Kenya safari up north, you might spot some members of the big cats such as leopards and lions roaming.

While the Mathews Range offers only limited but comfortable accommodations, mobile safaris can be arranged, enabling guests to venture deeper into the wilderness.

The Matthews Range is a pristine wilderness that is considered one of Kenya’s most isolated areas. Located between the arid northern deserts of the country and the more populated Laikipia safari region, the Range presents a striking difference from the adjacent flat savannah plains. Despite attracting very few tourists, this region provides some of the best walking experiences in East Africa.

Discover the beauty of Nabiyotum Crater

Given the abundance of wildlife in this area, the primary activity offered by its lodges and camps is game drives. Additionally, guided walks and birdwatching are quite popular, while trekking in the mountain forests presents stunning views all around! The camps we showcase also create opportunities for visitors to experience the culture of the Samburu people, who call the Mathews Range their home. Guests can visit their village and even participate in beading with the women, gaining insight into their craft. Sarara Camp offers a unique experience – observing the Samburu people as they call their cattle to water using a song.

The Samburu tribe is the original land stewards, eager to display the intricacies of their environment. Set out on foot journeys that teach animal tracking, tracing the paths left by elephants and bushbuck. Afterward, engage with local communities that preserve traditional practices through a mindful visit focused on genuine immersion rather than merely snapping quick photographs.

There’s plenty to engage in within this region of Kenya, making it a great standalone destination or an excellent addition to another part of the country.
