Discover Central Kalahari Game Reserve
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is located in central Botswana, it spans over 52,800 square kilometers, making it larger than Denmark and the second-largest game reserve in the world. It was established in 1961 to protect the unique ecosystem and provide a refuge for the San (Bushmen), who traditionally lived in the area.
The reserve is dominated by vast open plains, fossil riverbeds, salt pans, sand dunes, and thorny acacia trees. It is home to a variety of wildlife, adapted to the harsh semi-arid conditions. There are predators like lions including the famous black-maned Kalahari lions, cheetahs, leopards, wild dogs, and hyenas. Herbivores like the springbok, oryx, eland, wildebeest, kudu, giraffe, and hartebeest.

Best Time to Visit Central Kalahari Game Reserve
The best time to visit the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) depends on what you’re looking for, as the area offers unique experiences during different seasons. Best overall game viewing is from December to April. Best for birdwatching is December to March due to the presence of migratory species.
May to September (Dry Winter Season)
The camp becomes drier, with sparse vegetation, making it easier to spot wildlife concentrated around waterholes. There are fewer visitors, making it a great time for those seeking solitude. Wildlife disperses more, so you might need to drive farther to spot animals.
October to November (Hot Dry Season)
The reserve is very dry and hot, but game viewing is excellent as animals congregate at waterholes. This is a transitional season, with rains beginning in November, bringing life to the desert and kickstarting the green season.
December to April (Rainy Season)
Best time for game viewing as animals congregate on the open plains, especially after the rains when the waterholes are full. Predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards are more visible as they hunt migrating herbivores. Birdwatching is excellent, with many migratory species present.
How to Get to Central Kalahari Game Reserve
Getting to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve involves preparation, as it’s one of the most remote reserves in Botswana.
By Road
The closest major towns are Gaborone which is the capital city, Maun, and Ghanzi. There are several routes:
From Maun
The distance is 250 km and takes about 6-7 hours. The route takes the road towards Rakops, then follow signs to the Matswere Gate which is the parks main entrance.
From Ghanzi
The distance is 350 km and takes about 7-8 hours.
The route takes the road towards Xade Gate or Matswere Gate, depending on your destination within the reserve.
From Gaborone
The distance is 750 km making it a 10 to 12 hours drive. You should drive via Serowe, then Rakops, and finally to Matswere Gate.
