The best time to visit the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) depends on what you’re looking for, as the area offers unique experiences during different seasons. Best overall game viewing is from December to April. Best for birdwatching is December to March due to the presence of migratory species.

Low Season

May to September (Dry Winter Season)

The camp becomes drier, with sparse vegetation, making it easier to spot wildlife concentrated around waterholes. There are fewer visitors, making it a great time for those seeking solitude. Wildlife disperses more, so you might need to drive farther to spot animals.

High Season

October to November (Hot Dry Season)

The reserve is very dry and hot, but game viewing is excellent as animals congregate at waterholes. This is a transitional season, with rains beginning in November, bringing life to the desert and kickstarting the green season.

Peak Season

December to April (Rainy Season)

Best time for game viewing as animals congregate on the open plains, especially after the rains when the waterholes are full. Predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards are more visible as they hunt migrating herbivores. Birdwatching is excellent, with many migratory species present.
