Far to the north of Kenya, a densely forested mountain and three crater lakes provide a haven for a variety of birdlife, mammals, and reptiles. The beautiful Marsabit National Park is a refuge for huge tusked bull elephants, diverse birdlife, and reptiles.
Hikes in the dense forest, wreathed in mist, can be enjoyed along with camel rides, bird watchin,g and visits to the singing wells. The park has over 350 recorded bird species, including raptors, waterfowl, and forest species. The area around the park is home to various ethnic groups, which include the Rendille, Borana, and Gabra, offering cultural interactions and insights into their traditional lifestyles.

Best Time to Visit Marsabit National Park
Dry Season (June to October): It is the best time for wildlife viewing as animals are easier to spot near the water sources.
Wet Season (November to May): It’s a great time for bird watching. However, some roads may become difficult to navigate due to the rain.

These are the wettest months, making some roads difficult to navigate. However, the park is lush and ideal for birdwatching. Visitor numbers are minimal, and accommodation prices are lower.
High Season
June to October
The dry season offers good wildlife viewing as animals are easier to spot. It’s a popular time for visitors, but the park remains less crowded compared to other Kenyan parks.
Peak Season
December to February
This dry period is the most popular, with excellent weather, wildlife activity, and bird migration. Visitor numbers are highest, and accommodation rates peak during this time.
How to Get to Marsabit National Park

Distance: 560 km north of Nairobi and 263 km north of Isiolo
Gates: There are two gates, Ahmed with an exit at Karare and Abdul to the park headquarters.
Roads From Nairobi, the reserve is reached via Nanyuki and Isiolo, a distance of 570 km. The road is paved up to Merille, leaving a distance of 120 km off Murram road that is only motorable by 4-wheel-drive vehicles during the dry season.
By Air and Airstrips
The reserve is 2 hours by air from Nairobi and is adequately served by a tarmac airstrip located about one kilometer from Marsabit town center and 4km from the Park’s main gate.
