Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)

  • The Attraction Bit: The legendary “Roof of Africa” stands proudly as the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
  • The Routes: Choose the scenic Machame Route for high summit success, or the Marangu Route for comfortable hut accommodations.

Mount Kenya (Kenya)

  • The Attraction Bit: Africa’s second-highest peak offers a rugged, pristine, and significantly less-crowded alternative to Kilimanjaro.
  • The Routes: The classic Sirimon and Naro Moru traverse treats hikers to jaw-dropping savanna and gorge views.
  • Best for: Intermediate hikers seeking pure wilderness, or technical rock climbers aiming for the advanced Batian and Nelion peaks.

Mount Meru (Tanzania)

  • The Attraction Bit: Standing at 4,566 meters, this dramatic peak features a massive volcanic crater with sweeping views of nearby Kilimanjaro.
  • Best for: Trekkers wanting a steep, rewarding challenge seamlessly paired with exceptional wildlife viewing on the lower slopes.

Which is the best time For Mountain Climbing in Africa?

Best time to Climb Mountains in Africa

Timing your expedition perfectly is essential for a successful summit, as Africa’s prime mountain climbing windows align with the continent’s two primary dry seasons from January to mid-March and June to October, which deliver the clearest skies, dry trails, and optimal summit visibility.

  • Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania): Scale this legendary peak between July and October for the most stable weather, or from January to March for warmer temperatures and blooming wildflowers; however, you should strictly avoid the heavy rainy seasons of April, May, and November when trails become dangerously slick and visibility drops.
  • Mount Kenya (Kenya): Plan your trek during the warmest and clearest window from January to February, or opt for the cooler, less-crowded months of July to September, ensuring you avoid the torrential “long rains” that span from late March through June.
  • Mount Meru (Tanzania): Best tackled during the same dry windows as its neighbor Kilimanjaro, this volcanic peak offers the most rewarding climbing conditions and exceptional wildlife viewing from June to October and January to March.
  • Rwenzori Mountains (Uganda): Target the narrow dry windows of January to February or June to August to make navigating the notorious bogs and shifting glaciers of the “Mountains of the Moon” significantly safer and easier.

Considerations for Planning

Keep in mind that these optimal dry windows double as peak tourist seasons, meaning popular routes will see higher crowds and premium rates for permits and accommodations, while the unpredictable microclimates of high-altitude peaks mean you must always pack for sudden rainfall and drastic temperature shifts.

Do I need to be a professional climber?

Not really. Both Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya are regarded as high-altitude treks instead of technical climbs. It does not involve rock climbing and ice axe climbing, but it certainly requires good aerobic fitness.

Begin your preparation 3 to 4 months in advance. Concentrate on aerobic activities such as hiking, stair climbing, running, and cycling. The golden rule is feeling comfortable walking 5 to 8 hours per day on difficult terrain.

Campers will be provided with common camp equipment, such as tents and dining facilities, by operators, but personal equipment should be carried. It should include broken-in waterproof hiking boots, thermal clothing, a fleece jacket, a waterproof outer layer, a head torch, and a cold-weather sleeping bag.

Not at all. The porters will transport your large backpack (maximum weight of 15 kilograms) from one campsite to another. You only have to carry a light day pack, which will have your water and snacks.

No. According to national park regulations in Tanzania and Kenya, it is illegal to climb Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya without a registered guide and crew.

It is advisable that you choose a longer route according to your level of experience, but regardless, the Lemosho Route for Kilimanjaro and the Sirimon to Chogoria traverse on Mount Kenya have the highest summiting success rate.
