Best Time to Visit Buffalo Springs National Reserve

Dry Season – June to October

This is the best time for wildlife viewing as animals gather around the river and other water sources. The weather being dry it’s easier to navigate the reserve.

Wet Season – November to May

This is a good time for birdwatching, as many migratory species are present.

Low Season

March to May, and November

This is the wet season, wildlife viewing can be challenging as animals disperse due to the abundance of water. Birdwatching however, is excellent during this time, with many migratory species present. Tourist numbers are low, making it a peaceful time to visit.

High Season

June and December

These months are also part of the dry season, offering good wildlife viewing opportunities. The reserve is less crowded than the peak months, making it an ideal time for visitors who prefer a quieter experience.

Peak Season

July to October, and January to February

This period coincides with the dry season, making it the best time for wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources like the Ewaso Ng’iro River. Tourist numbers are higher, especially from July to October when international tourists visit.

How to get to Buffalo Springs National Reserve

By Road

Buffalo Springs National Reserve is about 325 kilometers north of Nairobi, which takes about 6 to 7 hours by road. A 4WD vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy season.

By Air

The nearest airstrip is at Samburu National Reserve, which is a short drive from Buffalo Springs. There are regular flights from Nairobi to Samburu.
