All About Nairobi National Park

Discover Nairobi National Park

This National Park is Located in

When you think of a capital city, images of skyscrapers and bustling businessmen probably come to mind. Therefore, it might come as a surprise that Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, is home to its own National Park. At 117 sq. Km, the park is home to the endangered black rhino, lions, hyenas, and giraffes which have been protected since 1946 when the park was established as Kenya’s first.

When Should I Go To Nairobi National Park?

January to March is the dry season with the rest of the year being a little bit wetter, but don’t let that deter you. Nairobi National Park is open all year round for visitors and has three campsites, walking trails for hikers, and numerous areas to have a picnic surrounded by some of the world’s most beautiful views. Nairobi is considered the World’s Wildlife Capital.

It may be the main tourist attraction in Nairobi but visiting the Nairobi National Park is a once in a lifetime experience. Within the park, you can visit the orphanages where animals are rehabilitated to live in the wild or go on the Nairobi Safari Walk and see which game you can spot. Cheetah Safaris runs an all day safari that includes a game drive and visits to the Giraffe Centre, David Sheldrick, and the National Museum. Best Time to Visit Nairobi National Park

Which is the Best Time to Visit Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is open throughout the year, but weather patterns influence wildlife visibility, road conditions, and visitor numbers. The park experiences two main seasons: dry and wet. These seasons determine low, high, and peak visitation periods, each with distinct conditions for game viewing and travel.

Low Season

March to May and November

The low season corresponds with the long and short rainy periods. During this time, vegetation becomes dense, and water sources are widely available across the park. Wildlife tends to disperse, which can reduce the frequency of sightings in one area. Some park roads may become muddy and less accessible, particularly after heavy rainfall. Visitor numbers are lower, making this period suitable for visitors seeking fewer crowds and reduced accommodation rates.

High Season

June to October and January to February

The high season occurs during the dry months when rainfall is minimal. Vegetation thins out, improving visibility, and animals concentrate around water sources, increasing the chances of wildlife sightings. Weather conditions are generally stable, with cooler mornings and warm afternoons. This season attracts more visitors due to favorable safari conditions and reliable road access.

Peak Season

July to October

Peak season aligns with the height of the dry season and school holiday periods. Wildlife viewing is at its best because animals are easier to locate and track. Visitor numbers are highest during this time, particularly on weekends and public holidays. Accommodation rates are typically higher, and advance booking is recommended for lodges and guided tours.

Visitors can access the park by private vehicle, taxi, or organized tour transport. Self drive visitors are advised to use a four wheel drive vehicle during the rainy season.
